If you are going to self publish....
1) type your book in page order with title page, table of contents, acknolegments, dedication, etc. etc.
2) spell check spell check spell check! this can not be stressed enough. Get two or three other people to proofread. You'd be surprised what little errors you miss just because you have been looking at the darned thing for months
3) While you are doing this, get quote from printers. NOTE: I have found that if you are doing a short run (less than 500 copies) then you may want to go with a Print On Demand (POD) Printer who can print digitally. Otherwise, you will pay a large amount of money for the book to be printed from ink plates.
4) if you intend to have your books sold in book stores, you need an ISBN number. Usually you have to buy these in bulk of 10 but you can go to Barcode Graphics at
www.isbn-us.com and buy just one (1) ISBN number for $55. You also get the barcode to put on the back of the book - oh yeah, you also get the EAN bar code for free (this is the barcode that states how much the retail price is - this is optional). Once you have done this, you can register the ISBN in a national book database with RR Bowker
www.bowker.com
5) When you are ready, send the book in the file format the printer requests.
Publishing is MUCH MUCH more than just the typesetting and layout of the book. Publishing also includes Marketing. For the book I just published, I sent press releases to all local readio station, tv stations, and newspapers who might be interested in doing an interview with the author. it costs $30 annually to have your book placed on Amazon.com (and they only request 2 to 5 books be sent to them innitially), go talk to the store managers at your local book stores and see if they would set up a book signing for you.

If you are looking for a publisher... there are so many options. You have to find a publisher who is in the market of promoting books that are like yours. For example, if it's a poetry book, you want to stick with publishers that work with poetry books, and if it's horror... you get my point. Go on the internet and do some research, make some phone calls and send emails. After my research, I found it to be easier for me to self-publish and then get a PR person to help market it.
Gosh, I can't think of anything else right now but if I can answer any questions, please email me at
