Christ said "no one who looks back is fit to enter the kingdom of heaven" the ignorant see the past of their enemies as an opportunity to enslave them to that past.. on the other hand the wise knowing that you reap what you sow sees the past of their enemies as an opportunity to free them from it.. some seek to heal their lives.. others seek to change their lives.. and life is healed and changes when we free ourselves from the past and are born again.. Glory to Christ brothers!

So the passage is really about following Jesus, leaving the old life behind, and following the calling God set out for you.

As they were walking along the road, someone said to Jesus, “I will follow You wherever You go.”
Jesus replied, “ Foxes have dens and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head.”

Then He said to another man, “Follow Me.” The man replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
But Jesus told him, “Let the dead bury their own dead. You, however, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord; but first let me bid farewell to my family.”
Then Jesus declared, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and then looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”
(Luke 9:57-62)

Precisely. We give up the backwards ways we have followed since the Garden, reject/repent of our self-serving ways and instead follow the original will of God which always was act in servitude to Him and to each other.

As one ages, there are lots of things that can pass a person by. This can include certain opportunities to marry, gain an education, have a certain career or place of employment or even interact with family members that you neglected. I mention this here because many times we are idealistic and sometimes we fail to take a certain road from the past. Such events can hinder our future. This is especially grievous to those who missed part of their lit path in God. That God gave vision, created space for preparation yet in the end for one reason or another the door was closed, often through fault of our own.
It may even include situations like Esau losing his birthright. A case, where a Christian does something wrong that there are consequences that can not be reversed. (See Hebrews 12, especially verse 17). This does not mean that one can lose their salvation, but one can lose part of what God has in store for them. In other words, you have squandered an opportunity that God set before you and there are situations where you can not get it back.
Such a person can become bitter, as things unfold differently from what you expected. If this occurs you are haunted by the past until you really let it go. You have to become dead to that failure and find new bearings in Christ.
The good news is that if one is still attentive to God, that you can move on. God will plant new vision, new things as long as one has breath in them. So I encourage anyone to remove the what if's" from the past. Get a new song in God if that is the case and you can still find the peace and contentment that true fellowship brings.
