  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I am a disgruntled, former jew, now agnostic teen with a question about religion.
I was wondering how to believe. Since I stopped believing in god when I was 10, I have been wishing that there was some way that I could become a believer again and find strength and love in God. But, with all the suffering and death in the world, I wondered where the "compassionate" God was when the earth needed him. It would be wonderful to belive, to be able to feel that someone loving was watching over me and sheltering me, but I find the whole religion idea too far-fetched. Please, help me find God.

I'm assuming that since you came here to CF you are interested in Christianity?

I can assure you, despite everything bad in the world, there is a compassionate God who loves you, who made you in His image, and who died for you.

If you want to PM me about anything you can.

If you have a need to find God, then you must find him yourself. No one can help you believe.

Look around you, read, search. After you have done all this, do what your instincts tell you. If you believe there is no God, then you have to go with that. If you believe there is, then you must go with that as well.

Unfortunately we don't get to pick and choose our beliefs, they are what they are. If you don't mind me asking, why do you feel the need to believe in God? Why can't you find comfort in other people?
I don't feel a NEED to believe in God, I just wish I could find a way to and find comfort through religion. I came to this site because I wanted to try to believe in God, as well as to get an understanding of Christianity.

Well you have an invitation already posted to help you and I can add mine to that if you wish. You will forgive us if we don't post publicly because even if you don't know it, this scenario that is developing is a tactic used to slander, frustrate or harass people while trying to witness. That and witnessing and testimony is a personal thing and contents therein are sensitive.

There you are, several invitations if you are sincere - I'm sure more will offer as well. Welcome to www.ChristianForums.com

I was wondering how to believe.
hmmm that's tough, and truth be told I cannot think of any Christian or Jewish philosophy which best expresses belief from a perspective like your own.

So here's what Lao Tse, says:
"If you want to become whole,
let yourself be partial.
If you want to become straight,
let yourself be crooked.
If you want to become full,
let yourself be empty.
If you want to be reborn,
let yourself die.
If you want to be given everything,
give everything up."

In other words:
Belief begins when your least set on finding belief, or when your most opposed to belief itself. That probably doesn’t make much sense, so let me try to put it another way.

You cannot find your ‘belief’ by looking at those things which cause belief (such as the beautiful or the serene) it is only when you ‘look deeply’ at those things which cause unbelief (the ugly and repulsive), that belief can form.

Are you following?

I have been wishing that there was some way that I could become a believer again and find strength and love in God.
I cannot guarantee anything, but it has been known to help to do the following:

-Sit in a chair facing a window in quite place with you leg placed firmly on the ground (not crossed, feet flat on the floor)(if this is unavailable try sitting cross legged in nature)
-Close your eyes and place your hand in ‘prayer position’
-Breath through your nose slowly and deeply for a little while (if you forget your breathing don’t panic, just remind your self to take one more deep breath)(you can exhale through your mouth if you like)
-keep your eyes close and open your hands so your palms are up yet the side keep touching, then extent this out in front of you(hold for a time)
-Again remind your self to breath deeply through your nose
-Imagine warm white light coming in through your breath(you probably won’t see it but just keep the thought in your head)
-Now, bring your hands back to prayer position and rest them on your face (hold)
-open eye and put your hand where ever comfortable
-look at what is in front of you(out the window)
-ask your self “what does the earth give to me?”
-reflect on it (let the thought flow, even the bad ones)
-now focus on different objects and reflect on their detail (you don’t have to remain seated)
-now ask your self your big questions like “can I find strength in God”, “does God exist” “who is God”

Many people find they get new insights into these questions if they follow this process

But, with all the suffering and death in the world, I wondered where the "compassionate" God was when the earth needed him.
I find my best answers to questions like this, when I also ask things like:

"Where is the compassion in the world?"
"Do I control my compassion?"
"How does other people's 'compassion' affect me?"
"Do I understand compassion?"
"What is compassion without pain?"
"What is pain without compassion?"
"If I was a father, what does that love entail?"
“Am I compassionate or am I evil, and what does that entail”

It would be wonderful to belive, to be able to feel that someone loving was watching over me and sheltering me, but I find the whole religion idea too far-fetched. Please, help me find God.
What are some examples fo things that brings you to say religion is far-fetched?

Belief should arise from having established reasonable grounds for that belief. My Christian faith derives from my considered belief that Christianity provides the most consistent and reasonable basis for my worldview. Plus, I have a valid experience of God that ebanles me to meaninful contribute to the lives of other people.

God says 'Faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.'

So my advice based on God's Word is read it. Faith (Belief in God) should begin to spring up in you before long and you will be faced with choices not in whether God exists or not but rather whether or not you will trust him.

If you read his Word and still find you don't have faith then don't worry -- God is a liar or at least doesn't exist.

God bless you.

This is a cry from the very soul of our human selves--the innate desire to find and worship a god. All of us have a desire, a need, to believe. It is built into our brains. In fact, a certain part of the brain controls our spirituality to some extent, and it is this part of the brain that urges us to believe.

Any religion can be spiritually tempting and seducing to the soul that seeks God. Beware. Don't make your decisions out of fear, or because something sounds nice. And don't make your decision because someone says that if you don't then you're doomed. Use your brain. Be logical in your approach.

lak55, the truth is that God is everywhere. He is not in a book, in a man, in a church, or in a Christian forum.

The Kingdom of God is inside you and all around you. Lift a rock and you will find, split a piece of wood, and I am there.

First, I have to say that you will not find comfort in religion, unless you change your actions. Socrates' said, "Happiness is a life well-lived", and in classic Greek philosophy, they believed that it is virtue which leads to happiness. Many Christian denominations agree with this idea, that God will reward you, for generally being a good person.

So, it isn't religion that can solve your problems. If you're upset over anything related to high school, wait a few years, and it'll just be a faint memory. (You'll probably even miss it.)
However, if religion is what you're looking for, I can probably help...

Judaism teaches that God is all things everywhere, all the time. I don't believe in any religion current, although I have believed in many. But despite that, for me, God's existence is and always have been undeniable. One the great myths, is that people need to believe in a religion to be religious, or that people need a book to tell them what God is, in order to believe in him. It simply isn't true.

In Hinduism, they say that the statues they make of Gods are not truly Gods. It's like an arrow pointing at heaven (just as the Bible says we can only see God but as a reflection). So, it's understandable why you wouldn't believe in God, without seeing that reflection. On one hand, the only reason you don't see is because you aren't looking. But guilt never led to anything good, and you aren't to blame, because it is God who has brought you here.

So, I would recommend a few things:
#1. Attend any religious service, of any religion. If that's too awkward, then ask your parents about Judaism. I'm not a Jew, but I've learned a lot about it, and it's a very wonderful practice. I'm not sure if your parents would be financially able (or willing) to send you to a Synagogue, though, so this might not be an option.

#2. Read religious scripture. There's multiple translations of the Bible on crosswalk.com and there's various religious scriptures on sacred-texts.com. I'd particularly recommend the Gospel of Buddha (Buddhism), the book of Job (Judaism\Christianity), the Tao Te Ching (Taoism), and of course, the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John (Christianity).

#3. Pray or meditate. Praying is easy, and requires no explanation. Just be comfortable and ask God to show himself to you, because you want to believe, and need him. According to Orthodox Judaism, you have to speak aloud and in Hebrew, but that's not totally necessary. What is important, though, I think, is that you speak to God in a way that's comfortable for you. A lot of people think that they need to speak to God in a formal way. Fortunately, God will understand you even if you don't speak in Hebrew or with the "thee's, thy's and thou's." If that's how you're comfortable praying, go ahead. But for me, it always feels best to talk to him as if he were a friend, standing right next to me. Because God is not just a ruler, a commander of the universe, but also a companion, a comforter.

Anyway, you could also meditate, to ask yourself if there is a God. I've found that there really is no question that can't be answered by meditation. Meditation is a bit more complicated than prayer and might even require practice, but it can give you a more obvious, definite and inspirational answer than prayer (as during meditation, you may actually hear or see the answer to your question). You could look online for tips or I could explain in more detail how to meditate, if you're interested. As a side-note, although meditation is mostly practiced by eastern religions, it's also practiced by Jewish Kabbalists (real ones-not Madonna) and Christian Mysticists, although I admit meditation is an extremely rare practice among Christians and some of them might even consider it Satanic.

Deuteronomy 4:29. "But from there you will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul.
30. "When you are in distress, and all these things come upon you in the latter days, when you turn to the Lord your God and obey His voice
31. `(for the Lord your God is a merciful God), He will not forsake you nor destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which He swore to them.

Those quotes from Lao Tse are remarkably similiar to what Jesus taught in Luke 17:33. "Whoever seeks to save his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it".

However, your statement that "belief begins when you're least set on finding belief" I do not accept as truth. It seems to be contrary to the teaching of Hebrews 11:16, that "the Lord is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him".

The beautiful scenes of nature are a testimony of Gods glory, His power and His love. Gods work in nature have lessons in truth and wisdom for everyone. If we study upon these things it will bring our minds to the Creator.

One of the best ways to start a relationship with someone is to talk to them. Start praying. A little at a time. Let God know you are interested in hearing from him. Also, start reading his Word. It lets us know exactly what he thinks and expects from us.

There are causes for unbelief. Therefore, in order to believe one must be enabled to identify these causes and shut the door to them. Do not open your mind to unbelief, Instead close it in the fear of God.

There is an enemy to both God and man. And there is seed for both belief and unbelief. As is the seed, so will be the crop.

The Lord knows your sincerity and angels of God are seeking to draw you from the snares of Satan. Satan is trying to hold you in captivity to his cruel power; you must learn to but face him in the strength that Jesus is willing to give you, and conquer the inclination to express unbelief in God.

Nothing so dispels doubt as coming in contact with the character of Christ. It is your privilege to trust in the love of Jesus for salvation, in the fullest, surest, noblest manner; to say, He loves me, He receives me; I will trust Him, for He gave His life for me.

If a person waits to have every seeming objection removed before they believe, they will never be settled, rooted, and grounded in the truth. God will never remove every occasion for doubt from our path.

The position of some is unexplainable, even to themselves, so they are drifting without an anchor. So long as they choose light over darkness God will protect them from being captivated by Satans power to decieve.

Spiritual things are spiritually discerned. The carnal mind cannot comprehend these mysteries. If questioners and doubters chose light over darkness and follow the great deceiver, the impressions and convictions of God's Spirit will grow less and less, and the promptings of Satan more frequent. Eventually the mind fully submits to Satans control and the soul is led into the mazes of skepticism.

Gods plan of salvation is such that those who are wise in their own estimation, who are puffed up by the teachings of vain philosophy, cannot see the beauty, power, and hidden mystery of the gospel. But to all those who are of a humble heart, who have a teachable, honest, childlike desire to know and do the will of their heavenly Father, His word is revealed as the power of God to their salvation.

The apostle Paul says: "But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them."
