How often to do Bible study/devotional at home?

I got a book for my 7 year old son for us to use as a bible study. It's at his level and looks like it will be fun. He has ADHD and we do attend church on Sunday and Wednesday nights. What I am trying to figure out if it is best to try to do this weekly, so I am not overwhelming him... Or every day, or just whenever we can fit it in to our already busy days (with school, church and other sports and activities). Thoughts? Do you do something similar at home in addition to what is learned in church?

For the first years of their lives we tried to do this daily.

Also, if you want good participation with active kids, have them act out Bible stories. Then quiz them on what they learned. That way once they are settled down after acting out the story you can reinforce some of the more subtle points they missed.

Later we encouraged them to read on their own and then have less frequent, more intense Bible study of a particular Bible book as a family.

Most of all, present it as a good and fun thing, not just a solemn duty. You are a parent, and know it is a solemn duty to raise your children in the admonition of the Lord. But they know they like to do fun things.

We would even at times indicate they would not be able to participate if they did not do x,y,z.

I know that sounds backwards and all wrong. But then kids see it as desirable, and something not to be missed, rather than something they have to do. And they would do x,y, and z so as to not miss out.

They still to this day like to get together and discuss, even in their teens.

It is good to do something everyday. A lot of Christians rely on Sundays and Wednesdays to educate our kids, but as parents we need to demonstrate and discuss it everyday. I made a habit with my kids to read stories, discuss and pray nightly at bedtime and give them the chance to ask questions. Sometimes they gave me questions I could not immediately answer, but it also gave me the chance to dig into my own understanding and knowledge. Turning off the TV 30 minutes earlier is a good way to bond in the Word and show that there are some things more important than that.

Thanks for all the input. I was afraid I might overkill. We did a very short one today. Just about John 3:16 and talking about what you need to do to be saved. (His answer: just have to believe in God and Jesus and you go to heaven). I loved that when our book referred to a verse, he wanted to go find it in his Bible. So we now have two books that I think he will like. One has a CD to go along with it, the other has a comic book format. :)
