Please refer to post 4
or just tell me I don't exist
or am a complete idiot
I'm sorry M&M, but I didn't understand post #4 so I didn't respond.
Many thanks for your response, I read it but couldn't respond right away as I was behind with a project at work and haven't caught up until yesterday, and then got caught up in the regions uk & Ireland section on things that looked like they would be really quick but took a lot longer...
This part didn't make sense to me, so it's as far as I got. Magnetic fields are caused by the movement of charged particles, typically, but not exclusively an electron moving from one atom to the next down a string of atoms will produce a magnetic field around the string. I've never heard of what you described so wouldn't know how to comment.
I may have it wrong, but this seems to make sense to me:
The Bohr model of the atom has an electron orbiting a positive nucleus. This will result in a magnetic field which is known to exist. Get a lot of unpaired electrons in each atom as in a lump of iron and there is the possibility of a big overall magnetic field if they couple together nicely which they often do.
But as well as being right, the Bohr atom is also wrong. Two opposite charges changing positions like that should radiate EM waves, and they don't. And the loss of energy in the EM waves would bring the orbiting electron to a stop and kill the magnetic field almost in like femtoseconds and that doesn't happen either.
So the way I rationalised it was to reason that if the electron orbited in a micro dimension, then the magnetic field, which comes out orthogonal to the current, would come out in a macro dimension. But since the charges move in a micro dimension there would be nowhere for the EM wave to go so it wouldn't radiate. Fixed (at least in my head for now).
This may be the reason Gunnar Nordstrom proposed the extra dimensions in the first place, though he may have done it for another reason, I'll look into that and hope to find out within a few months.
