• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I was just wondering how long some of you have abstained from alcohol. Even if you have only quit for a day or a week, that is great.

I believe we do need to support each other and keep each other accountable. I have learned through A.A. that we need the support and encouragement.

I wasn't even going to post in the Recovery Forums I guess because of my pride and I didn't want anyone to know I had/have a problem. But I'm here to say that God has blessed me with 9 days of sobriety so far, and I hope and pray I never drink again.

congratulations on 9 days!! I wish you well with your sobriety.

as far as abstaining, its been 2 yrs that I have not drank and about 3 that I havent used. have quit numerous times in the past but for the wrong reasons and thus failed. this is the longest sober and clean for me.

And AA is a good resource for help, support and encouragement.

welcome to the Recovery threads!

I did three months back in the spring of '99, but didn't stick with that.

More recently, I stopped on August 6th, 2006. I did not have another drink until September 20th, and that was just a single glass of wine. I have only drank excessively once, and that was an open, controlled, responsible way. Since I have no intention of giving up drinking completely, my goal is not to abstain but rather to be responsible and smart about it. Therefore, I have been responsible since August 6th which amounts to a bit over three months. This is the longest stretch of that sort since I started drinking 13 years ago. And things have never been better.

I've been sober 5 years thanks to the grace of God.

I am a Christian. I also am a member of AA. For me, my walk in AA has improved since I made a decision to follow Christ. I try to keep AA seperate from my religious beliefs but they do overlap somewhat. God works in strange ways. Before I got sober I wasn't really fit to improve spiritually.

AA is structured so that a Jew, Christian, Atheist, or Agnostic (anyone) can get sober. The way alcoholics think, very few would get sober if they had to take a religious litmus test before becoming a member. My active alcoholism had me spiritually sick as well as physically.

I tried to get sober only through Church. I am aware that some people are successful doing it that way. I wasn't very good at it.

Hopefully nobody judges me for being in recovery. One thing I notice, the longer you are sober the less the judgement of others matters. Even people that seem like they are all together have problems. We all have our turn "in the valley". When I had 60 days I was real self conscious. At five years my drinking days are in the rear view mirror (one day at a time). I've made my peace with God. The judgments of others in regards to my alcoholism is irrellevant.

This is my third time sober. If you're really an alcoholic, it don't go away. Your body has physically changed so you don't metabolize alcohol the same way the normal person does. It tried drinking again after 6 years. It was a disaster.

In some ways people could look down on us. On the other hand, people in recovery get to see real life miracles every single day. I've seen people in the grips of addiction literally raised from the dead.

Take Care,

Prodigal7
