Well when the Spaniards arrived the Aztec Empire at its heigh didn't stretch very far north or west of Mexico city/Tenochtitlan. A hundred miles maybe. To the east it stretched all the way to the coast and then up to the borders of the curren state of Veracruz. To the south it once again stretched to the coast and then as far west as the Balsas river. And to the south-east it stretched all the way to near what is the Mexican-Guatamalen border today. Their hold over the south-west portion of their empire was not very strong though, so some might not really consider it part of the Aztec Empire.

hm.... good question. I dont know much bout it's boundaries north and south but I so think that it more than covered all of the Yucatan Peninsula.
I think those are the Mayans you're thinking of.
