From my experience most people have difficulty getting back past the Civil War - I am rather surprised to see that almost EVERYone in this thread goes back to the 1600's! Are these solid name lists or are you jumping some gaps along the way? Just wondering.

Me, I got lucky. A descendant of my ggg-grandfather's sister had connected her line back to 1630 and sent me a copy. I have since been able to verify it through many other records and have seen tombstones and memorials dating to the late 1600's. They arrived as Quaker immigrants to northern Delaware (actually part of Penn's Colony at the time) in 1689 and they multiplied all over. My database is online here:

I have some fairly solid leads that are well documented. The only thing really left for me to do is verify all the information on my own. On some of the branches the information is questionable, but for the ones I'm truly trying to track down, the information is well documented in several places with history texts, historical society accounts, etc. I believe I've stated that I've gotten one line back to 1498. That particular thread I don't have DOCUMENTED that far, but they are leads that I need to track down.

Solid documentation on one line to 1635--when my ancestor had his ferry license taken away for "venturing too many in a canoe". Prior to that, things are fuzzy. We had problems because for a few centuries, the family has assumed the Applegates came from Norwich in England. The problem is that none of the names and dates in the parish registers line up.

But now it looks like the Norwich assumption may have been wrong, and thomas may have come from the other side of England--Somerset. If that is correct, then we can push back into the mid-Fifteenth Century.

I have only been 'in' geneology for a year and what I thought would be easy threads to follow have been and still are, difficult. So much for my mother's side. Dad's side is still giving me fits however I am pleased to find a unbroken chain of kin back through the 1700's and into the mid-1600's and this is only in America. Finding threads in England is so-so. Ireland is more difficult. Scotland is fuzzy even on a clear day and let us forget about Wales. The two ancestors I have there was a G-Grandmother and a GGG-Grandfather who is listed only as Mr. Brain. Evidently he was shy. Finding out my one GGG-Grandfather's family (Brass) was Dutch was a surprise and even more so that his ancestors may have come from Prussia was a even bigger surprise. Why? I thought I was Celt through and through. lol.

My name is certianly unusual "Pickel", My father was all most 70 when i was born, He married my mother at the age of 21, he was 61, so it has been very hard to search his history. If there is someone with this last name, and has some info, give me a email.

This is all so interesting to me..I work in a library and this is a common every day occurance for me....We have people come from all over to research their families...
I have gone back as far as early 1800 with mine...It is more difficult for black families. It is so much fun...I love a mystery anyway..

I just wanted to jump in here as well. I am so interested in this stuff, but I don't really have the time or money to get into it. Some of these geneaology sites want payments and I just don't have that. I do know that my Mom's Mother's people have done a bit of research, but I never got my hands on those documents. What I really want to do is research my maiden name - my Dad's side of the family.

I have found out 2 interesting facts through, via my husband. On his Mother's side, he's related to King Henry VIII. My husband's Grandmother and some of her people have done extensive research on this. It's pretty funny because my husband and his brother have been known to make jokes here and there about "heads are gonna roll!" We all know what Henry did to his wives.

And so, my husband's other Grandmother - his Dad's Mother - cousins with the Wright Brothers. Yall know that story...the brothers from Dayton, Ohio come down to Kitty Hawk, NC to fly their plane. Well, my husband's Grandmother passed away a few months ago.

Just some interesting info I had for ya. Now if I could just get my own family history uncovered!
