  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I haven't actually heard much of his stuff but I have a feeling I'll fancy his music - going on what I know of his influences etc.

What would you recommend for a first listen?
Come On! Feel The Illinoise! is what I would recommend first if you are going to listen to some Sufjan. Great album...

True.

Seven Swans is really good as well, and he just released a five disc set of Christmas music (carols and hymns as wellas originals) called Songs for Christmas that is fantastic.;)

hahaha.

I pronounce it "Suff - Yan"
If you like his stuff, check out Iron & Wine. Lovely stuff.

Totally.

Woman King, his newer CD is GREAT. But all of his albums are phenomenal.

Since we're on the topic, I might also recommend:

Sun Kil Moon- This was a side project of Mark Kozilek, who was the lead singer of Red House Painters. Amazing stuff.

Have you ever seen Sufjan live?

Uh. May. Zeeng.

Best show I have ever been to (although the first Nickle Creek show I went to is a rival, it was close to 3 hours long, and the last 45 minutes was a completely acoustic encore set. :yum: ) The man's a genius.

If you are looking for individual songs to listen to, the ones that got me hooked on listening are:

Oh God Where Are You Now?

That's from the Michigan album and it's the one that got me hooked because of David Crowder Band.

Other ones that sealed the deal for me are:

John Wayne Gacy Jr
Casimir Pulaski Day
Chicago
Decataur

They are all from the Illinois album so you can't go wrong with that.

The christmas album is also very good with plenty of original sounding christmas songs and is so much better than almost every single christmas album out there.

To answer the original post:
I pronounce it Suf - Jan. I say it how it's spelt. If I'm singing along to "Hands Open" I do say Suff-Yan :)

BTW, 1000 POST!!

Oh man - I managed to get my hands on "Seven Swans". Woah!! The title track and "The Transfiguration" are absolutely amazing!!!! The second halves are just incredible.
Seven Swans is really good. To Be Alone With You is one of my faves off that one.
