People go by what other people say and claim. But there isn't a eye witness that is still alive. So you read what is written and decide that way. Not a very strong way, huh? I've tried reading the bible a million times, I can only read a few pages before I have to close it. It needs to be written in a more clear manner. You have all these people saying that children will not go to hell, but you find all over the place in the bible. The bible isn't as clear as you think. But if you can believe everything you read, then go ahead. I just need some things clarified before I can accept everything that is in there. I believe in God and Jesus. I believe that they are both good. But there are things that make me uneasy. The sacrificing.

"Turn the other cheek"(when faced with confrontation present the other side of your face or walk away)
"He who is without sin may cast the first stone"(do not judge others for everyone is a sinner)
"Gather the little children unto Me" (one time when Jesus was at a gathering the adults were shooing the children away. I guess in part because sometimes we adults forget while we are all caught up in daily life stresses that children also need to hear the word of God. Children have worries of their own and they do matter.)
"If my right eye offends you pluck it out"(I do not mean to offend you, but if I do tell me so that I can rid myself of it)
"Love the sinner. Hate the sin"(all our God's children. It is our job to love not to hate. We can hate sin, but if it causes us to hate the sinner it contradicts the teaching)
"I am Jesus of Nazerth"(He did not take pride in being the Son of God)
"Forgive them Father for they know not what they do"(This one gets me everytime. His dying words. Love quateable to God-"for God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son)

The list could go on...

Sounds like you're reading a lot of OT. For the new beginner or seeker of Christ, I'd recommend the NT first. The OT is more like "meat and potatoes" for the older believers, showing us how God moved through the men of old. The NT, the gospels to be more specific, are best for the new readers of the bible.

Another suggestion alongside that is get a different translation. Starting out with the KingJames version is kind of hard. The older language style tends to confuse newbies.

Question posed to me: "How do you know Jesus is such a nice guy if you've never met him?"

You take the time to read about the things he did, get to know who he is (not was) in a personal way. Listen to what he says, read about what he did and allow him to speak to you through prayer and meditation. It worked for me.
