Hi everyone,

I’m asking this question today because it’s something that brings recurring anxiety every now and then, and recently it came again and I’ve decided to ask the community for help.

Now for someone like me I’m extremely cautious to what I believe about certain doctrines and theoligies.

this is a list of what I believe:
-God created the heavens and the earth
-God is infinitely kind,loving,caring,holy,all-knowing,all-seeing,ever-present.
-He exists in 3 consciousness’s,the father,the son,the Holy Ghost
-He created man in his own image
-Sin eternally separates us from him and we rightfully deserve death because of it.
-Every human is a sinner
-Every human has an age of accountability
-God sent his beloved son to die on the cross for our sins
-Jesus Christ, his beloved son was perfect and sinless, him in the flesh.
-In order to be saved, one must believe in their heart of who Jesus says he is and trust in what he says and who he says he is.Thus meaning having faith in him.
-Another incredibly important thing,NOT A WORK,but is to repent of your sins.Which means changing your mind and ways to match Christ, which is only done by the power of the Holy Spirit, and to continually repent of sins as you progress in life.
-One must also obey Jesus,NOT TO OBTAIN SALVATION,but because you love him and aim to be a fruitful tree and an obedient servant.
-Believing without obedience “is dead”
-Believing in facts and agreeing to the facts of Jesus isn’t enough,to be saved one requires faith in him, which essentially means to trust and rely on him
-Jesus WILL return to earth to overcome evil
-All that believe and trust in him will receive eternal life
-To obey one must obey Jesus’s commands, which means obeying the law of Christ(love thy neighbor as thyself, and to love the lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind.and strength)
-The wicked that deny Jesus and disobey him will be rightfully judged at the great white throne on judgement day
-God will create earth anew someday

Then there’s Some minor things, such as
-The kosher laws
-The stories in the word as real
-The Bible as the inerrant Word of the Lord
-The devil is a liar, murderer, cheater, swindler, and menace

I’m asking this because, understandably Jesus said he came to turn family against family,I’ve encountered some conflict with my parents over faith. My parents are more lax about faith and believe, but I done see them pray, they still cuss, and at times coarse jest. While I do the complete opposite of that, and don’t take faith as a simple thing,I take it as a very very serious matter that is crucially important to the wellbeing of the soul.so I take things more seriously and literally, and my sister has called me obsessed at times, and I worry at times thinking “what if they’re right?” And I worry because I don’t want them to be right that I take things too seriously and that I take faith matters right and appropriately.

I worry also because many unbelievers say we Christians are “brainwashed” or mind manipulated, which I don’t worry extensively About,I simply brush their opinions off,but can’t help at some times worry.

Are there any teachings to avoid or steer clear of that I should be aware of and what are tell tale signs you are “brainwashed” on biblical matters.

I’m not speaking of faith matters on that term “brainwashed” but people who have false teachings that they think are right.I’m not saying faith in general is “brainwashing” whatsoever at all and I hate it when people say that about our faith in Jesus.

I. The first answer to your questions is to study the Foundation of the Faith. And by this, I don't just mean the Bible (Which is part of it), but to study all the history around the Scriptures and the Church.

So I'm talking about stuff like my "History of the Trinity" thread, which talks about the early foundations of that doctrine coming from the OT times. As well as lots of other stuff around the history of the Bible.

History of the Trinity

Depending what you believe exactly you might be a little brainwashed because some believers tend to deny "the near east" roots of the Bible because they are so against paganism, and want to oversimplify the Bible to fit "their manual for life that everybody can interpret" model of Sola Scriptura etc. Basically those non-Christian critics might make a few valid points or have a few grains of truth in what they say and it is best to figure that out and deal with it and move on (Acknowledge it without going to far and turning a molehill into a mountain).

II. While study is good for some of this it may not be enough. I believe that our theology is something we need to "incarnate" ourselves in how we live our lives.

1 John 4:18

New International Version

18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

QUOTE (Robert Webber, Ancient Future Faith)
"During my seminary education, I never felt we really addressed the question: “What does it mean to be a member of the church” Later, when I turned to the early Christian tradition and began, for the first time, to understand what it meant to be a member of the body of Christ, it was like removing blinders that had covered my eyes.
I learned from the early Fathers that the church is intrinsically connected with Christ and his victory over the power of evil. The church is therefore to be regarded as a kind of continuation of the presence of Jesus in the world. Jesus is not only seated at the right hand of the Father, but is visibly and tangibly present in and to the world through the church. This is an incarnational understanding of the church. It is a unique community of people in the world, a community like no other community because it is the presence of the divine in and to the world. This concept of the church has specific relevance to the world of postmodernism.
. . . What this means for the church is that Christians must recover the primacy of being a Christian community. . . .
. . . the church is the primary presence of God’s activity in the world. As we pay attention to what it means to be the church we create an alternative community to the society of the world. This new community, the embodied experience of God’s kingdom, will draw people into itself and nurture them in the faith. In this sense the church and its life in the world will become the new apologetic. People come to the faith not because they see the logic of the argument but because they have experienced a welcoming God in a hospitable and loving community. QUOTE

amen! Nice going!

I agree also with what you call "minor teaching" in God's Word

Jer 31:31-34 our brains have been washed of rebellion against God's Word
2 Cor 5:17 our brains have been washed - of the "old things - all things become new"
Rom 6 -- our brains have been washed of the old ways - we now walk in newness of life.

something sort of related to "testing" to see if there might be a problem/risk.
If I am wrong about my beliefs - there is NO RISK for me

Here is someone praising God for being "brainwashed" out of Islam and out of gay lifestyle - super amazing testimony

Right,I’m asking because I’m someone who is very very Cautious about who and where I receive information from about biblical matters and questions.I make sure to do research and know who teaches what, now I don’t want to be flagged for this, but prosperity gospel teachers are 100% false, such as Hagin, osteen, and Copeland.
Mormons,Unitarians, unificationers,Jehovahs witnesses, and SOME SDAs(not all, only some) and some claim MacArthur,Piper, sproul, and Graham are too.
How do you know if you’re NOT “Brainwashed”...?

When the Creation gets very very small and strange, that's a bad sign. It is Majestic, as is it's Creator.

Hi your views are good and your goals and standards match the word. Now in your life the promise of joy, and peace are sure and you know your faith will grow through trials which you endure without losing peace or joy and grow into maturity and as you noted being fruitful. Now Abraham believed God and it was accounted to him for righteousness and so we see back then righteousness was based on grace through faith. Now Abraham lived a great and blessed life and is a great example to us all and he did have a few recorded failures. Now on the other hand Lot is called righteous too and his life is one of mostly regret and failure but he too is recorded as righteous and just like Abraham he had faith to a degree which he lived a much less fruitful life than Abraham but he indeed did make it. Now in your family you are putting your faith 1st and foremost and see your family not. This concerns you but in reality they may just be immature Christians. As you go you can share passages and testimonies to them and let the Spirit bring conviction and stir in them the sanctification process. One thing you might do is ask them to join a two year Bible reading plan and perhaps meet as a home church once a week where everyone can share what they got out of the readings. The word will speak into their lives if you can get them to start reading it.

Are there any teachings to avoid or steer clear of that I should be aware of and what are tell tale signs you are “brainwashed” on biblical matters.
People want to have their brains washed with hearing that God is all about them and giving them good lives and solving their problems. And they want the wash of hearing that God so loves them, no matter how wrong they are, and they do not give attention to how our Father is guaranteed to deeply correct us to become like Jesus and to love like Jesus.

Ones feed on hearing how they are guaranteed Heaven and how it will be so great for them, but they do not say much about how we are guaranteed how our Father corrects all of us who are His children . . . as Hebrews 12:4-14 guarantees. Also, we have 1 John 4:17 guaranteeing how God's children have been perfected in God's love so that "as He is, so are we in this world." (in 1 John 4:17)

So, possibly the brainwashing preaching is that which is self-centered, versus Christ-centered in its main attention.

But, yes, we are dearly loved, but while getting real correction; plus - - - our Father's unconditional love and how Jesus so loved us on Calvary is not only about us, but how God loves us is our example . . . required of us, that we so love like God loves us!

"forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." (in Ephesians 4:1-32)

"And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma." (Ephesians 5:2)

So, how God loves us is our example of how He expects us to love any and all people. And so, our prayer needs to be all-loving > "first of all", our Apostle Paul says > 1 Timothy 2:1-4. Prayer, then, is not only about our own selves or certain favorite people in our lives > "if you love those who love you, what reward have you?" Jesus Himself says in Matthew 5:46.

Therefore, prayer needs to be Christ-centered, and about loving any and all people. Prayer, then, can be a time to prepare for how to love each and every person we see or hear about or think about during our day :)

And we have Jesus Himself praying for us . . . according to His faith > Romans 8:37. So, in prayer we need to be depending on how Jesus is able to pray for us to succeed in so loving; it is not only about how we are able to get ourselves to pray and to have faith, then!

But it seems ones are making prayer seem to be about how we are able to get ourselves to pray and have faith.

Therefore, we are wise to make sure we keep actively seeking our Father for how He is able to correct us, and for all Jesus is able to pray to us according to His faith, then discover how we become able to pray all-lovingly.

So, in case someone is mainly hearing only how God loves him or her, this could be misdirecting someone's attention to mainly being concerned about one's own self, and not first being concerned about how to please God.

"rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:4)

Ones can have a way of not talking about how God's gentle and quiet love has beauty which is "incorruptible". They talk about God's love for them, but they do not talk about how His love in us (Romans 5:5) can not be corrupted by nasty and negative anger, and unforgiveness, and boredom and loneliness, and frustration and stress-out, and dominating and driving demands for pleasure, and hurtful arguing, and complaining.

And while things keep getting the better of people, they might get messages of sympathy, but not be told how "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." (in Philippians 4:6-7)

God's peace is not only a nice feeling of relief, but this peace is almighty to guard our hearts and our minds. Plus, this peace rules us to do what God desires and we discover how He has us loving each and every person . . . in this peace of His love which is all-loving >

"And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful." (Colossians 3:15)

So, this is a basic, to which "all" are "called". This is not only for certain super-spiritual and mature people, but Jesus calls to "all" >

"'Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.'" (Matthew 11:28-29)

But there are ones who have people believing that God does not talk personally with His children. And this brainwashes them to perhaps depend on themselves and on those who say God won't communicate with them. But, actually, our Father does much more than talk to us > He shares His own love with us, right within "our hearts" > Romans 5:5. And Jesus personally guides us in His "yoke" and by how our Father personally rules each of us with His own peace in our "hearts" < very personally, indeed, in our "hearts" :)

So, even while He might not talk to us, we can submit to how in us He is ruling and guiding, deeper than words. In His love's "gentle and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4) we are in personal and sensitive sharing with God Himself. And so we discover how He is never silent, but He is quiet and kind and caring and guiding us with words along with how He works deeper than words, constantly >

"for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." (Philippians 2:13)

And so brainwashers will tell you things are up to you, on your own. They say you are the one to control things and maybe get God to help you, at times. They treat God like He is distant, even conceited so He likely does not want to talk with you. Yet, Jesus is not at all conceited, but He came to this earth in order to reach us and share so personally with us and save us so we may be adopted children of God. And this is our example of how we, too, are expected to love and have hope for any person, at all . . . including for brainwashers! :)

"They zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them." (Galatians 4:17)

So, we ourselves need to make sure we are not going around trying to treat people so great so they will then suppose we are so great . . . so we can use them for what we want.

Beware of the "you can use me" act > treating you like you are so great and talking smart and acting charming, and therefore you can trust that person to give you what you want and be nice about it. Not only religious leaders use this trick, but ones can pretend to be good companions, by putting on this act . . . to brainwash you into hoping to use someone for what you want.

So-o-o . . . part of avoiding being brainwashed, then, includes not being all about yourself :) If we are first really about God, we are submitting to Him and how He rules us in His peace, and He guides us reliably according to all He knows so we are not taken the wrong way.

People can act; so we do not go by only what people say and do >

"'Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.'" (John 7:24)

Also, "be content with such things as you have" > in Hebrews 13:5. Ones will try to brainwash us that we do not have enough. Not only advertisers, but ones trying to use us, can start with this . . . criticizing us and our lives and churches and relationships; they might be right about certain things being wrong, but this does not prove they are able to bring us to what is right!

So, we are wise to make sure with God, all the time.

"Test all things; hold fast what is good." (1 Thessalonians 5:21)

I may even be able to do what is good, but test anyway in prayer; because God is able to bring us to better.

worry also because many unbelievers say we Christians are “brainwashed” or mind manipulated

Brainwashed = conditioned to believe something g you didn't believe, or made to believe something that's not true.

Who is believing that what is true and who has been conditioned to believe what is false?

The truth is that we Christians are believing the truth and the non Christian world is believing that which is false.

Stay on course. You're in this for the long haul. Keep studying the Bible. It is likely that you'll find some things you were taught are wrong, and it's a matter of readjusting yourself to it. Memorize verses in scripture so that you'll be ready to answer the opposition. When psychological persecuters come against you, you can say "the Bible says..." and quote it. Most of the time they will be silenced, because they inherently recognize that you base your life on the greatest authoritative source.

In time, you'll recognize legalism in certain peoples' teaching, which opposes grace. And in discerning that, you will gravitate toward people of grace. Growth in the Christian life takes time and endurance of faith.

Brainwashed = conditioned to believe something g you didn't believe, or made to believe something that's not true.

Who is believing that what is true and who has been conditioned to believe what is false?

The truth is that we Christians are believing the truth and the non Christian world is believing that which is false.

This is true, on a basic level. We are still at risk for deception however even within Christendom. Remember what St. Anthony the Great said in the fourth century: “Expect temptation until your last breath.”

This is true on the highest level.

Jesus is The Truth The Life and The Way.
All other belief system that do not acknowledge this are false.

Yes we can always expect to be subjected to attempts to get us off Jesu narrow way, but being attacked with false beliefs etc only confirms that Christianity is correct.

Of course this is correct. My point is that we are still at risk from false heretical teachers even within Christianity.

I feel like this one gets Honorable Mention

Summing Up My Work's Main Idea & Conclusion

In fairness, I think it's mostly entirely original thinking.
The two examples I have posted have one thing in common
And I think that's my answer to your question

Christianity is not an organisation [people belong to but a personal relationship with Jesus.
So we are responcible for what we accept as the truth.

In seeking a saviour I put my faith in Christ to GOD wash my brain to bring me to redemption and to sanctification...

For some weeds to claim I'm under human influence is par for the course I play upon, sigh.

Well, respectfully I disagree; I believe we are saved by being collectively grafted onto the Body of Christ, which is Christianity as a whole, as St. Paul explains in 1 Corinthians, especially chapters 10-12

Ask them for their ideas on II Peter 1

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Ephesians 4:23
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

We all will pray for your family.
