This is just for light conversation. I'm curious how others observe the Sabbath.

  • What is your routine or schedule like?
  • Do you have a particular tradition?
  • Do you go to a specific church / synagogue? Or keep it at home?
  • Do you study randomly or do you study according to a specific plan?
  • How many congregation or family members keep the Sabbath with you?
  • What are your meals like?
  • Do you sing hymns / play music?
  • Do you follow the Sabbath according to particular ordinances mentioned in scripture, if so which scriptures?
  • Anything else you wish to offer?

I live in God's eternal rest. I don't observe one day as being different than another.

Romans 14:5-7, "One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike. Each must be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day does it for the Lord. The one who eats, eats for the Lord because he gives thanks to God, and the one who abstains from eating abstains for the Lord, and he gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for himself and none dies for himself."

We always say Shabbat prayers and light the candles. Aside from that the rest is not really family involved for me, my wife does not observe it the same. I read scripture and do things at home for the most part. I don't observe it to the point of not cooking, etc. so meals are as usual. We attend a Sunday church, so the Saturday Sabbath is a rest and private worship day for the most part.

We Don’t cook from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday but we do use our crockpot and we try to keep it holy we’re still in search of a church that fellowships on Saturdays. We don’t spend money on that day…we also call and check on family members on that day

We usually light candles at sunset on Friday, although this is a tradition and not a command. On the Sabbath, I take it easy and rest, don't do any big housework and try to stay focused on the Lord.
I don't do the strict Orthodox Jewish type of Sabbath.

I have been meditating on this very question and am reminded of the following:
Hi Phillip,
I see where you're coming from but I'm "in Yeshua". He railed against the Pharisees and their adding to, and twisting of, the Law. I definitely observe the Sabbath but I want to keep it a joyful experience, not make it burdensome. Of course, this is just how I see things.
P.S. The scriptures do seem contradictory, don't they?

Shalom Shalom Rachael Rachael, perfect peace and well being Sister;

Contradictory? No. Confusing? Absolutely. But mainly so by traditions of men, not the instruction of Torah.

You make a good point about the teaching of Messiah calling out the abuses of the ruling class of Priests, Lawyers, Teachers and Politicians. But we must remember power was given to the 70 plus 1 to resolve conflict and issue judgements. Matthew 23 is a key chapter in discerning our role in these matters. Our Master informed us we must conform to their judgements, however difficult. They in turn would be held accountable for the error. Let us rejoice in His rest and leave the rest to Him.

If Sabbaths are not observed according to His written instruction, then it is not being observed - joyfully or otherwise. Joy is a choice. Obedience is not. We must seek to be the least among men, remember?

Context is the only manner we have to distinguish a prooftext from a pretext.
The context of Torah can only be provided by Torah as it reveals the character of the Creator. Even then, it must be interpreted as it was given; in its relation to its intended audience and in regard to the circumstances it was intended to address. The only choice is to love Him and His instruction.

"If you love Me, keep my commandments." Be joyful in that. That's how I see it, but its not always how I do it. And for that, I repent and confess my sin before the Lamb and redouble my efforts to walk in His ways. For we are in the time likened to the Days of Noah and Messiah is here, even at the door. All Aboard!

Phillip, I read Matthew 23 much differently than you. Our Master told us to not emulate their works because they place heavy burdens on us.
Do you cover your stove on the Sabbath and not flip a light switch? I don't think that's what the Lord intended.

@Rachel Rachel

And you would be correct. I should apologize, because I tricked you into objecting. You are of course, correct to say the Messiah requires we follow a better path. However, my response was an attempt to draw out those that might agree and it was an attempt to clarify a technicality that often muddies these waters.

I would remind the gentle reader that all things in scripture have their appointed times. Anyone who reads Matthew 24 outside of the context of Matthew 21 is missing the entire point.

Messiah Y'shua's instructions were very precise. But moreover, in His interactions with the 'Chief Priest and Elders', He made it known that changes were coming. So it is important in times of transition that we recognize that quoting a scripture that is true to the literalist, may not always remain relevant.

In Matt 21, Y'shua made the leaders of the people 1) concede their authority was coming to an end and 2) name their own punishment for their transgressions. But I reserve the main question till the end of this post.

During this time, Messiah was confronted by the Cohen Gadol, the Parushim, Zedokim, Herodians, et al. Here is the interaction starting at v23 (KJV for the readers sake):
My question becomes, WHEN was the kingdom taken from them and when did the authority of the Seventy plus One (given by HaShem to adjudicate matter of Torah like the observance of Sabbath, and at the suggestion of Moshe's Father in Law I might add) cease?

This is another trick. Let's see who bites...

I do what God said to do in the fourth commandment; I relax and refrain from doing any work.
So, from sundown on the 6th day till sundown on the seventh?
