Hello All,

The main question here is...

CAN YOU SEPARATE GOD'S 10 COMMANDMENTS FROM LOVE?

Jesus says in MATTHEW 22...

MATTHEW 22:36-40
[36] Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
[37], Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.
[38], This is the first and great commandment
.
[39], And the second is like to it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself.
[40], ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS.

NOTE: Jesus when asked this question from the Lawyer is quoting from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18. Finishes by saying that on the two great commandments of LOVE hang all the law and the prophets.

What does v40 mean?

LUKE 10:25-28
[25], And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up, and tested him, saying, Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
[26], He said unto him, what is written in the law? how read you?
[27], And he [the Lawyer] answering said, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself.
[28], And he said unto him, you have answered right: this do, and you shall live.

NOTE: The lawyer knew what it means to love God and love his neighbore. How? Notice the question that the lawyer starts os by asking Jesus; "WHAT SHALL I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?". Now notice that the very same question is asked again and look how Jesus answers...

MATTHEW 19:16-19
[16], And, behold, one came and said to him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?
[17], And he said to him, Why call you me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but IF YOU WILL ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS.
[18], He said to him, Which? Jesus said, YOU SHALL DO NO MURDER, YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, YOU SHALL NOT STEAL, YOU SHALL NOT LIE, [19], HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and you shall love your neighbour as yourself.
Honor your father and your mother: and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

NOTE: Notice in that the question from the rich young ruler is the very same question as asked by the lawyer "WHAT SHALL I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?" but both were answered by Jesus in a different way. When the Lawer asked the question he answered his own question by saying LOVE to GOD and LOVE to his neighbor (from Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18). Jesus said he answered correctly. When the rich yound ruler asked the same question Jesus answered by saying keep the 10 Commandments and starts out quoting them as his duty of LOVE to his neighbor.

Is this a contradiction of scripture? In no way the answer has already been given in MATTHEW 22:36-40. ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS (LOVE TO GOD and LOVE TO MAN) HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS.

When we LOVE GOD and our NEIGHBOUR it is expressed through our actions.

If we LOVE our neighbor...

* We will honor our parents (Exodus 20:12)
* We will not kill them (Exodus 20:13)
* We will not commit adultery with thier spouse (Exodus 20:14)
* We will not steal from them (Exodus 20:15)
* We will not lie to them (Exodus 20:16)
* We will not covet what they own (Exodus 20:17)

If we LOVE our God...

* We will not have other Gods (Exodus 20:3)
* We will not make idols of anything in life and worship them (Exodus 20:4-6)
* We will not take his name [follow] him in vain (Exodus 20:7)
* We will remember his Sabbath day and keep it holy (Exodus 20:8-11)

ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS [OF LOVE] HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS.

PAUL understood what JESUS was talking about...

ROMANS 13:8-10
[8], Owe no man anything, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law. [9], For this, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, You shall not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, namely, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. [10], Love works no ill to his neighbor: therefore, love is the fulfilling [DOING] of the law.

Notice what PAUL says here? LOVE is fulfilling [doing] God's Commandments. God's Commandments or duty towards your neighbor is summed up as you shall LOVE your neighbor as yourself v9. [On these two commandments hang ALL THE LAW and the prophets Matthew 22:40].

PAUL agrees with Jesus that if you LOVE you will fulfill God's LAW. What about JAMES?

JAMES 2:8-12
[8] If you fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you do well: [9], But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convicted of the law as transgressors. [10], For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. [11], For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if you commit no adultery, yet you kill, you are become a transgressor of the law. [12], So speak, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

James is using the second great commandment of LOVE which hangs all the commandments of our duty of love to our neighbour and quotes the commandments showing our duty towards our neighbor. This is why Jesus says “On these two commandments hang ALL THE LAW and the prophets” Matthew 22:40. and again..

JOHN 14:15 [15], IF YOU LOVE ME KEEP MY COMMANDMENTS.

You cannot separate LOVE from God’s LAW. Love is the FULFILLING of it and is demonstrated by OBEDIENCE to Gods’ LAW as our duty of LOVE to God and man. [“On these two commandments [of LOVE] hang ALL THE LAW and the prophets]

...................

CONCLUSION: It is very clear that JESUS, PAUL and JAMES are all in agreement that the two GREAT COMMANDMENTS of LOVE that JESUS quoted from Deuteronomy 6:5 and Leviticus 19:18 were used and known in the OLD Testament scripture to sum up our duty of LOVE to God and man in the 10 Commandments.... God's LAW (Ten commandments) is not separated from LOVE it demonstrates it. You cannot have LOVE without fulfilling God's Ten Commandments. [On these two Commandments of LOVE hang all the LAW and the prophets].

My thoughts are you CANNOT separate God's 10 COMMANDMENTS from LOVE because the FULFILLING of God's 10 COMMANDMENTS are the very expression of what LOVE is. God is LOVE and whosoever LOVES is born of God.

What are your thoughts?

May God bless you as you seek him through his WORD.

Are you asking specifically about the Sabbath commandment, aren't you?
Tbh, it took me a minute to figure out what "broken heart" meant. I thought somebody got dumped and needed a word of encouragement.

But that's not the kind of broken heart we're talking about here. So. Yeah...

I'll show myself out now.

CAN WE LOVE WHEN OUR HEART IS BROKEN?

MATTHEW 12:34-35 [34], O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

JEREMIAH 13:23 [23], Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? then may you also do good, that are accustomed to do evil.

JEREMIAH 17:9-10 [9], The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? [10], I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

MATTHEW 15:19-20 [19], For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: [20], These are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashed hands defiles not a man.

JOHN 5:42 But I know you, that you have not the love of God in you.

...........

We break God's Commandments [SIN] because we do not LOVE.

Yep looks like we have a broken heart that needs fixing as there is no LOVE in us without Jesus.

Hi David nice to see you. Not really but since you brought it up. Jesus says from MATTHEW 22:36-40, ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS [OF LOVE] HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS.

Same thoughts are expressed from the OP and post # 4 in MATTHEW 5

MATTHEW 5:17-29
[17], Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
[18], For truly I say to you, Till heaven and earth pass, one stroke or one pronunciation mark shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
[19], Whoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
[20], For I say to you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

[21], You have heard that it was said of them of old time, You shall not kill; and whoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
[22], But I say to you, That whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whoever shall say, You fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.
[23], Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has ought against you;
[24], Leave there your gift before the altar, and go your way; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
[25], Agree with your adversary quickly, whiles you are in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you be cast into prison.
[26], Truly I say to you, You shall by no means come out there, till you have paid the uttermost farthing.
[27], You have heard that it was said by them of old time, You shall not commit adultery:
[28], But I say to you, That whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.
[29], And if your right eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you: for it is profitable for you that one of your members should perish, and not that your whole body should be cast into hell.

Yep Jesus is certainly referencing the 10 Commandment applying them to the thoughts and feelings. Seems like we need a new heart because ours is broken.

............

NOTE: After stating that none of God's LAW (10 Commandments) have been abolished v17-19, Jesus then goes on to say; v20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus then goes on and amplifies the application of God's LAW to the heart (thoughts and feelings) which is the very root of sin saying that if we lust after women we are committing Adultery and being angry with your brother as murder from the 10 commandments as examples in v17-27.Jesus starts out by saying;

Jesus finishes by saying in v48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Looks like we have a broken heart that has no LOVE.

If GOD's 10 COMMANDMENTS as shown through the scriptures are the very expression of what LOVE is.

HOW do we get to LOVE?

CONTINUING the OP...

We do indeed have a broken heart that needs fixing to LOVE because we have none without the one who is LOVE. This is why under the NEW COVENANT even the teachers of God's LAW did not know what Jesus was talking about when he said...

JOHN 3:3-7
[3], Jesus answered and said to him, Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

WHY do we need to be born again? As shown through the scriptures we have no LOVE.

1 JOHN 4:7-8 [7], Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loves is born of God, and knows God. [8], He that loves not knows not God; for God is love.]

1 JOHN4:12 No man has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwells in us, and his love is perfected in us.

1 JOHN4:16 And we have known and believed the love that God has to us. God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him.

1 JOHN 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar [JESUS says they gave committed murder in their heart -Matthew 5:20-22] for he that loves not his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?

1 JOHN 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. [ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS - MATTHEW 22:36-40]

Continuing..

[4], Nicodemus said to him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
[5], Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
[6], That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
[7], Marvel not that I said to you, You must be born again.

He that is BORN of GOD does not commit sin because sin is breaking how God's LOVE is EXPRESSED through OBEDIENCE to God's WORD. This is expressed in a different way in 1 JOHN 3..

1 JOHN 3:3-10 [3], And every man that has this hope in him purifies himself, even as he is pure.
[4], Whoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
[5], And you know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
[6], Whoever stays in him sins not: whoever sins has not seen him, neither known him.
[7], Little children, let no man deceive you: he that does righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
[8], He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
[9], Whoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
[10], In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother.

NONE LOVE GOD or their fellow man while breaking any of God's 10 COMMANDMENTS as LOVE is an EXPRESSION of OBEYING them. You cannot separate the 10 Commandments from LOVE they are the very expression of what LOVE is and LOVE is the fulfilling of them under the NEW COVENANT promise * HEBREWS 8:10-12

HOW ARE WE BORN AGAIN?

I believe the Ten Commandments help define love.

Absolutely brother dreadnought, thanks for sharing, how can we brake them when they are the very expression of our duty of LOVE to GOD and LOVE to mankind?

HOW ARE WE BORN AGAIN?

As the scriptures have already shown above already none of us have a heart to love. We have no love in us. We must be Born again because we need a NEW HEART to LOVE...

GOD'S NEW COVENANT PROMISE OF A NEW HEART TO LOVE...

EZEKIEL 36:26-27
[26], A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
[27], And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them.

JEREMIAH 31:31-34 [31],
[31], Behold, the days come, said the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
[32], Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was an husband to them, said the LORD:
[33], But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, said the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
[34], And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, said the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

But how are we born again?

MATTHEW 9:10-13
[10], And it came to pass, as Jesus sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with him and his disciples.
[11], And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to his disciples, Why eats your Master with publicans and sinners?
[12], But when Jesus heard that, he said to them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.
[13], But go you and learn what that means, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Jesus gives a clue here. When the Pharisees said why does Jesus eat with publicans and sinners Jesus replied and said "They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sickBut go you and learn what that meansI am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance."

We are all sick with a broken heart that does not LOVE. If you are like the Pharisees and do not know your a sinner, Christ has not come for you. If you feel you are whole when you are really sick then you will believe you have no need of a physician.

Go learn what that means?

The very purpose of the 10 COMMANDMENTS is to give us a KNOWLEDGE of GOOD and EVIL; SIN AND RIGHTOUESNESS * ROMANS 3:20; ROMANS 7:7; 1 JOHN 3:4; JAMES 2:9-11; PSALMS 119:172.

God's LAW is our schoolmaster that brings us to Christ, our Saviour *Matthew 1:21; the true physician, who calls sinners who see their need of him, to BELIEVE God's PROMISE of salvation through faith under the NEW COVENANT * EZEKIEL 36:26-27; JEREMIAH 31:31-34; HEBREWS 8:10-12.

Our job is to come just as we are with a broken heart full of sin that the law of God has revealed in us and cry out Lord save me I perish. Then look up to the one who has died in our place by faith and BELIEVE his WORDS of FORGIVENESS. Go and sin no more he has bidden you, repent and confess your sins to him (1 JOHN 1:9; Acts 2:38; Proverbs 28:13), he will change your heart to LOVE as you grown in grace and walk in his Spirit * GALATIANS 5:16; EZEKIEL 36:26-27; JEREMIAH 31:31-34; HEBREWS 8:10-12 as you BELIEVE and FOLLOW his WORD * JOHN 8:31-36; JOHN 3:15-18

JOHN 8:31-36
[31],Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If you continue in my word, then are you my disciples indeed;
[32], And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
[33], They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how say you, You shall be made free?

[34], Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, Whoever commits sin is the servant of sin.
[35], And the servant stays not in the house for ever: but the Son stays ever.

[36], If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

1 JOHN 5:4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world, EVEN OUR FAITH.

We are Born again by FAITH as we BELIEVE and FOLLOW the WORD of GOD.

To him who calls us in LOVE to love another be all glory and honor forever and ever amen.

JAMES 2:8-12
[8], If ye fulfill the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:
[9], But if ye have respect to persons, YOU COMMIT SIN, AND ARE CONVINCED OF THE LAW AS TRANSGRESSORS.
[10], For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.
[11] For he that said, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, said also, DO NOT KILL. Now if thou commit NO ADULTERY, yet if thou KILL, YOU ARE BECOME A TRANSGRESSOR OF GOD'S LAW

Yep, James is pretty clear if we brake ANY of God's Law (10 commandments) then we are a TRANSGRESSOR of God's LAW and commit SIN. James quotes two of the 10 Commandments saying that if we break them we commit sin v9 that are summed up in the 2nd great commandments of LOVE to God and LOVE to our neighbour in v11.
