How do you feel about Easter?

So, Easter is upon us. For me, it's nothing more than a welcome four-day long weekend sandwiched between two four-day short work weeks.

But I would imagine that for a Christian, a person who actually believes in what the weekend represents, it would be full of various feelings.

Outraged at what was done to Jesus on the cross.
Sad that Jesus died.
Thankful that He died for you.
Relieved that He was resurrected.
Happy that He returned to Heaven.

I suppose someone could feel all or none of those things. What do you feel?

If you are part of a liturgical church you tend to be focusing on a different bit of the story each day. Last sunday the focus was on Jesus procession into Jerusalem, today (Thur) on the last supper and the final conversations with his friends (including the feet washing), tomorrow (Fri) on the crucifixion. Saturday tends to be left without a service, which I find leads to the sense of loss, confusion, unclarity that the disciples clearly felt on that day, and Easter morning should be the great celebration of his rising and everything that follows from that. Easter should be the celebration that wipes away every tear. (Unfortunatly in the western churches we aren't as good at celebration as we are the penitential preparation and we 'fast' for the 40 days of lent, then celebrate for not much more 40 mins on easter morning. We should be celebrating all the way through to Ascension and Pentecost)

Well the actual holiday period and the traditions that surround it have no real connection with me. I believe Easter is a pagan celebration grafted on to and interwoven with Christian themes and therefore i do not take part in it. but i will reply to your points:

Sadness at the way He died yes. I understand Jesus had to die for me but the brutal and savage way in which they killed Him seems excessive in the extreme.

Cant say i am. This all happened near on 2000 years ago so it was all done and dusted before i was born, So you cannot be filled with expectation over something when it has already happened and is finished.

Happy that He returned to Heaven.

Neither Happy or Sad. Jesus is with me through the Holy Spirit. So with that in mind Jesus being in heaven does not have the connotations of Him being away from me. I will be happy though when Jesus returns and shows Himself to all mankind and puts the corruption of this world to an end.

Easter is a pagan observance brought into the early assemblies. It has become a widely spread observance even onto other pagans. Would pagans observe special days of Yahuah? I highly doubt it. Easter in it's origin and entirety is pagan. There is no scripture in the word of yah that we observe easter and there wouldn't because it is pagan.

Evil men teach lies so many will live in confusion and darkness. Evil men use scripture to assure blind and dumb sheep as many are to follow and practice what they do not know. Then believing in the lie, they offer strange worship to Yah.

Reexamine yourself if you are in the faith of Yahushua. Repent of worldly traditions and seek yahushua.

Then, on the other hand, there those of us who celebrate "Easter" in recognition of the Passover, since Jesus is our Passover Lamb [1 Corinthians 5:7-8]. Jews celebrated the Passover in semi-fulfillment (looking back on the historical exodus, while looking forward to the coming Messiah). Christians celebrate the Passover in complete fulfillment, since Christ our Passover Lamb has been crucified. Culturally, the pagan title "Easter" has been stamped on this celebration through the nepotism of Rome, but theologically we are in fact honoring Christ, our Passover.

And how do I feel about what Jesus did for me on the cross? Wonderful! His death gave me life. His sacrifice bought my freedom. I am forever grateful.

For me I'm in awe the Christ willingly gave Himself up at the cross. As the veil of flesh, was ripped and broken so that individuals can now approach the God directly. There is a quote from Major Ian Thomas that sums up the gospel this way:

"The life that He lived qualified Him for the death that He died. The death that He died qualifies us for the life that He lives."

The best news is that He lives as the life within Christians (Gal 2:20) TODAY! Each Christian needs to grow and mature as a branch does on the vine (John 15). So each thing in my life, every decision, all are done with Christ guiding me, changing me from within, TODAY!

Without Easter, that would not be the case.

What was done with Jesus on the cross wasn't a pretty site but necessary. Easter is about Jesus's resurrection - without it christianity wouldn't mean anything. Its not about the easter bunny and eggs - which is a pagan thing.

Thanksgiving of faith that through Him (Jesus Christ) we have access by one Spirit (the Holy Spirit) to the Father (per Ephesians 2:18) for everlasting life. This gift of salvation from His passion (destroying sin) and resurrection (destroying death) which we in the Orthodox church worship as the new Passover (Pascha). April 27th on our calendar but those in the west worship the same resurrection too of course.

I feel a lot of emotions...but first, my understanding is rooted in the Jewish festival rather than pagan. As such, though I celebrate the day with my community, I celebrate in understanding of Festival which Jesus lived out.

There is obviously complexity in the answer because Jesus did a lot of things within that final week. We have to deal with sacrificial system, Lamb selection day, Passover, Seder Meal, Unleavened Bread, and First Fruits.

I both sympathize with the Lamb that was selected and praise God for His death. By the Lamb going out of the gate of Jerusalem our sins were forgiven and the threshold was sealed. I don't hate those who killed the Lamb because they were apart of God's atonement for the people. I do have a righteous anger towards the Chief Priests and those who conspired against Jesus, but Jesus loved His enemy and so I will do the same.

Now, Jesus going to Heaven is not about Passover...but the story after Passover...

Me too... but because I understand scriptures differently and place Yeshua dying for our sins as the Passover Lamb during passover. Therefore, that is the time to commenorate what He did for us.

That's what all of us are trying to do in dating easter. Unfortunately due to historical issues over calculating when that should occur we end up with different dates, but all of us are conciously dating it the way we do precisely because its supposed to occur at Passover. It's not your understanding of scriptures that are different, but a slight difference in your calculation of when Passover occurs.

Well, we didn't "celebrate" it for the first time this year because my husband was sick. It occurred to me that, yes I know that the time Easter is celebrated isn't correct and people get all legalistic about dates that way...

I used to accept that until we actually didn't celebrate the resurrection
this year. Then it hit me on that Sunday - We don't celebrate Jesus' resurrection any other day of the year if not for Easter... so it never gets recognized formally if we don't do it right now.

So, I'm opting to continue Easter celebration and shut out the critics who complain & moan about dates. When do they celebrate? probly never!

Anyways, I'm also not angry that Jesus was crucified becuz He came here for that very purpose as His mission - I'd have to be angry at God becuz
that was HIS plan to do so and I"m thankful for that.

To be honest I dont know what I feel. The Bible never says when Jesus was born really, it never gives a date. Nor does it say when Jesus dies, it never gives a date. I feel happen and sad for Jesus's death, for its sucks that Jesus had to go through those things. But it was Jesus's gift for us and I wont be sad of the gift that Jesus gave us. What Jesus had to go through makes his gift even more valuable to us than anything in the word.

Maybe my feeling on holidays are weird because most of them I dont get to celibrate.
