Genesis just says a serpent, so how did people conclude it was Satan?

The serpent was merely a tool of Satan, just as he has used tools throughout history. He can even use believers. Jesus told Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.” Of course Peter wasn't Satan, but he was a tool at that moment. The snake, before the fall, was a very intelligent cunning creature. It was a choice instrument to tempt man. But the source of the temptation was Satan.

There's also what God told the serpent:

15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

You can take this as a literal translation, but if you, as the popular saying goes, "read scripture in light of other scripture", this is populary inferred to be talking about Jesus' (the seed of a woman) victory over the temptations (brusing the head of the serpent) and then his bodily death (the serpant brusing his heel).

The Book of Revelation reveals that the serpent was satan.

Revelation 12:9
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Revelation 20:2
He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;

It's agood question. There are a lot of teachings we get from centuries of tradition, that we assume are in sciptures somewhere.

Here is an interesting verse in light of free choice discussions. ... (-:

Ge 3:1
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.
