How do the righteous inherit the wealth of the wicked?

The following is a meditation I had when exegeting the Book Of Job's 27th Chapter. I post it here to get opinions and to edify anyone who is interested:

He may prepare it [wealth], but the just will wear it And the innocent will divide the silver (Job 27:17).

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children and the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous (Prov 13:22).

[T]he ships of Tarshish will come first,

To bring your sons from afar,

Their silver and their gold with them…

Foreigners will build up your walls,

And their kings will minister to you

For in My wrath I struck you,

And in My favor I have had compassion on you.

Your gates will be open continually;

They will not be closed day or night,

So that men may bring to you the wealth of the nations,

With their kings led in procession.

For the nation and the kingdom which will not serve you will perish,

And the nations will be utterly ruined
(Is 60:9-12).

Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks,

And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.

But you will be called the priests of the Lord;

You will be spoken of as ministers of our God.

You will eat the wealth of nations,

And in their riches you will boast
(Is 61:5-6. See also Ps 68:29-31 where this is described, perhaps with a reference to demonic forces).

It is our contention that in the above, the silver and gold that God’s people bring from as far away as Tarshish is “the wealth of the nations.” What Isaiah is describing is God’s people inheriting the wealth of the nations, as well as their kings as slaves, and bringing them back to the New Jerusalem as booty. They are not bringing back wealth they made on their own.

What proof do we have of this contention? We have a picture of it in the Book of Exodus:

Now the sons of Israel had done according to the word of Moses, for they had requested from the Egyptians articles of silver and articles of gold, and clothing; and the Lord had given the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have their request. Thus they plundered the Egyptians (Ex 12:35-36).

It is worth noting that Job said that the just will inherit the wicked’s clothing and silver. We should not view it as a coincidence that the same exact thing happened to the Egyptians.

Further, we should not view the Egyptians “finding favor” with Israel as a sign that they felt bad for them and helped them out. Rather, God struck them with fear of the curses he had just performed against them and compelled them to accede to being “plundered.”

It is the plunder of the righteous taken from the hands of the wicked that Job speaks of when he says, “Though he piles up silver like dust and prepares garments as plentiful as the clay, he may prepare it, but the just will wear it and the innocent will divide the silver.” We have shown that the wicked’s wealth gets left behind when they are vanquished by God. Then, when the righteous inherit the world, they get the “wealth with it.

What exactly is the “wealth?” We have one speculation. Being that the whole topic refers to eschatology, the wealth is spiritual and not material.

What is spiritual about wealth in the sense that it can be taken at the expense of wicked men? The following may be a stretch, but consider how the Scripture speaks of how God “endured with much patience vessels of wrath prepared for destruction” in order “to make known the riches of His glory upon vessels of mercy, which He prepared beforehand for glory” (Rom 9:22-23).

Now, connecting the inheriting of the wicked’s wealth and the reprobation of sinners may be overly tenuous. However, there is in a real sense a tangible benefit to the righteous that the wicked even exists. It makes known to them the riches of His glory. This is a wealth obviously gained at the expense of the wicked and it is only finally appreciated when God judges the wicked in His righteousness. In fact, the riches of God’s glory, because they pertain to God, far excel any material riches that the wicked may presently forfeit to the righteous in the present life.

The Fattening of Sheep for Slaughter
“Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter.“ James 5:5

Dr. Gill comments, when beasts were slain for some extraordinary entertainment, or for the solemn festivals and sacrifices the Jews, when they lived more deliciously than at other times; and then the sense is, that these rich men fared sumptuously every day; every day was a festival with them; they indulged themselves in intemperance; they ate and drank, not merely what was necessary, and satisfying, and cheering to nature, but to excess, and gorged, and filled themselves in an extravagant manner: the Syriac version, instead of “hearts”, reads “bodies” and one copy reads, “your flesh”: and the last phrase may be rendered, as it is in the same version, “as unto”, or “for the day of slaughter”; and so the Arabic version, “ye have nourished your hearts, as fattened for the day of slaughter”: like beasts that are fattened in order to be killed, so were they preparing and fitting up by their sins for destruction.

“But thou, O LORD, knowest me: thou hast seen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the slaughter, and prepare them for the day of slaughter.“ Jeremiah 12:3

Again, John Gill, either out of the fold, or from a fat pasture; so fat sheep are plucked from the rest, in order to be killed: this shows that their riches, affluence, and plenty, served but to ripen them for ruin and destruction, and were like the fattening of sheep for slaughter; which the prophet, by this imprecation, suggests and foretells would be their case, as a righteous judgment upon them;

Why does God want the wicked to be fatter? Is the harvest of justice that much more satisfying?

First, what you originally referred to is in the parable of the talents in the OP... now.. to more fully understand that parable, check out what revelation says about the church of Laodicea

"15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17 You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. 18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. 19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne."

Both Job and the parable is more fully understood when read with this passage of revelation.

As far as why would God will the wicked to get fat.. well, there might be something of what is called social justice in that.

The righteous have their reward, period. We will have way more than worldly and ungodly people will ever imagine. All the ungodly people have is what they can get out of this life.

How unfair would it be then, to deprive them out of even that? Instead, give them what they desire, this world, and the righteous what they desire, life with God..

They go to their death, why would anyone want to take the tiny portion of joy they might have away?

That is the way I see it.. its justice of sorts. They got what they wanted, it is just apparent that they want much less. I want more... and the more has its own reward. let them have theirs too.

The OP confronts how the wicked accrue riches and in some sense, when they die their riches are forfeited to the righteous.

Yes, and this is addressed fully in the parable of talents. OKay.. so let's begin at the beginning and I will do my best to fully explain.

God, in his everlasting grace, offered us salvation. Its free. All we have to do, is accept it.. but our acceptance or not doesn't mean we weren't offered it freely.

So.. we reach out our hand and take what he is offering. Salvation. People think being "saved" means that we will be forgiven of our sins when we die, and then we get to go live in heaven with God..

Wonderful. It DOES mean this too.. but it is much much more than this.

Salvation means we are FULLY justified under the law. The price was paid for our sin, our sins forgotten, and now stand before the law absolutely and 100% justified and blameless.

Now.. this does not mean we can sin all we like and say a magic phrase and make it on the blood of Jesus into heaven. It means, literally, that we are NO LONGER SINNERS.

we don't sin.. we are absolutely dead to sin, and alive in Christ Jesus. Jesus said phrases throughout His earthly ministry like take up your cross and follow Me, to those more is given, more will be required, If you want what I have then you will suffer what I suffered, Paul said that we crucify ourselves on the cross with Jesus, and ressurect new in Christ..

the list goes on from what is written, but in the end all of it means the work of salvation means we do not need to sin, sin has no more power over us.

Many people today miss that entire concept. Sin has no power over the one who is saved - we are not slaves to sin.

You ask then, I don't see any sinless Christians running around.. lol. Totally true.. its crazy, because I don't see many at all.. very very few in fact. Many people think they are Christians, and think they have nothing more to do at all in order to be saved.

When I was first saved I heard the Holy Spirit speaking to me so loudly.. like a freind HE sat and began teaching me the bible and what everything means, and also.. how for me to live.

There was one thing that He said to me, you don't need this thing.. don't do it. Well... I didn't listen.. it was HARD not to do that thing.. hahaha

I kept trying not to do this thing the Holy Spirit told me not to do.. but it was sooo hard! I was trying and trying and then it hit me like a ton of bricks...

Quit trying.

Just that.. anything I am "trying" to do, is from me.. is from a nature that is sinful and imperfect.. Jesus did it already.. and two people cannot drive the same car without the car wrecking if both are tugging in opposite directions.

When Jesus said a house divided against itself cannot stand HE meant it.. it will fall like a ton of bricks.. and this is not what Jesus says will happen if we let HIM do the work.

Its like driving a car verses having someone else drive you. If you drive you feel free, yet you have to concentrate on where you are going, on what other drivers around you are doing so you don't wreck etc and you miss the scenery.

The really freeing thing is to chit chat on the cell phone, watch the beautiful sunset as you drive by, enjoy some beautiful music on the radio and let someone else have the headaches and the worries.

This is what Jesus offers to us.. no more headaches and no more worries.. just let him drive, stop trying, and He will do it all.

This is why it is written the burden is light.. it really is light! its amazing, because today I, for the first time, don't want to do anything at all at all that Jesus does not want for me! I don't care about the thing anymore.. its nothing.. not there..

But to get it, I had to acknowledge the gift and accept it.

Now,... this is wealth.. this is more wealth than any dollar. I have the Holy Spirit living inside of me.. seriously.. just like in the bible its crazy awesome! It is like being inside the Kingdom of God right this second.. I am not on earth anymore.. This is the best drug anyone could imagine inventing, this is what it means to be rich, and I honestly cannot describe what the Holy Spirit feels like, or what its like to chit chat to God like a friend anytime day or night and never wonder if He heard you.. because He answers you right then!

This is the wealth. The fire this gold is refined in, is whatever means something really big to you.. and letting go of it.. for each person this thing is something different, for some it may be pride, for others family, for others their wealth, for someone else their addictive sin...

but everyone has to give this one thing that means everything to them up... the cost might seem pretty high... but you will gladly pay it once you know what you are giving it up for.

The people the wealth is being taken away from are those who did not make the final transaction. The ones who said Oh sure, save me from my sin I will recite a magic sentence and be done with it all until I die. THOSE people failed in their part.. and from those people what little they had, it will be taken away.. completely..

They wanted nothing real to do with this salvation if it meant giving up this world.

If anyone makes that final transaction, then they have overcome the world...

more will be given them... I am not real sure what that means yet so I am sorry..

I am certain though, that there is more.. perhaps someone else can explain more fully who has experienced the more!

Well.. where I am at this point in my understanding, is surrounding many are called but few are chosen.

The ones who are chosen, are the ones who God knew would make that final transaction, but He offered to more people than just those elect.

But personally I don't understanding anything but the middle road between freewill and predestination. I think its in between the two.

My understanding I am sure will grow.. I have only been Christian for a month and a half now. Prior to that I was Muslim sorry I cannot be any more helpful!

He is teaching me though.

My sister is Muslim, though she is not devout. Keep your eyes on Jesus and pray for Him to sustain your faith always! I know I do.

I do! I will continue!

And I will pray for your sister also! He has been leading many many Muslims through dreams and visions!

That is why I am Christian!
