For the past 4 -5 months I have been working for a non profit pro-life non-profit organization. We are are start up organization. my boss hired me to develope a web site to be a fundraiser for pregnancy counseling centers. Anyways, I am the programmer and its just me and my boss. Towards the end of my project, we hired a graphic designer for the site. As it turns out, his design skills are not really up to par as I thought he would be. we are paying him a low hourly wage but now we see that he is costing us more because he takes a lot of hrs to complete his job.

We would have been better off paying professional who charges higher rates but spends less hrs doing the task.

Today I told the designer that I had to let him go. I feel aweful for doing this and I feel like I might get in trouble with the Lord for lettting him go. This is my first time managing someone underneath me and I feel like I didnt do too good of a job.

How am I supposed to look at this from a spiritual point of view? Not to mention, I don't think he's a born again Christian, even though he does believe in God.

Gosh I feel horrible someone please help me. :o

Their is nothing "unchristian" about firing someone.

If they're not doing the Job you paid them for, then you let them go, even the Bible states that if a man wont work he shouldn't eat.

"For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. "

So you just put it simply along these lines.

"We're sorry, but you're not a fit for our company, and we've got to let you go."

Hi Yourchild,

Telling someone that they no longer have a job is probably one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Unfortunately I have fired many. I own my own company and also was a managing engineer at Compaq computers.

There are two types of "firings'. The one where people are laid off because of cut backs or similar reasons. To me this one is the hardest because typically the employee has not precipitated his departure. I typically will do anything in my power to help these people.

The second type of "firing" is for performance reasons. It is important to have attempted all that you could to help this person increase their performance whether is was attendance related, work quality related, etc. Once you have done your best then there is nothing else that can be done. The bible is specific that people are responsible for their actions and that those actions have temporal consequences.

I hope this helps.

It is most unloving to keep someone in a job where they are not able to work satisfactorily. You are frusrated with them, they are usually frustrated or overwhelmed or ineffective.

How do Christians fire their employees?
Usually very badly. I've observed that Christian organizations villify employees who have to be fired and don't know how to continue relationships with those who are no longer employed there. I have a friend in another state who, when grocery shoppoing, is routinily ignored by people they used to vacation with because the Christian organization fired her husband several years ago.
