"Writer" is a pretty broad category. I suppose that all depends on what you mean and what you plan to do. Do you want to write stories? Poems? Novels? Fiction? Nonfiction?
First and foremost, I can tell you what my creative writing professor told me..."Write boldly, write badly...JUST WRITE!"
Other than that, just look around you for inspiration. Inspiration isn't necessarily this enigma that just falls from the sky and hits you on the head at random moments, though I do concede that at times, God will inspire us when He so choses. But the thing about inspiration, in my opinion, is that it exists all around us and it's up to the writer to activate it, either by appreciating some aspect of life or one's surroundings that others would hardly give a second thought to or by presenting a different perspective on the same old things or simply by providing evidence that everybody has a story to tell.
Granted, this is all coming from a poet, but prose works this way, too. Maybe what you could do is pick a corner/section of a room and write about the things that you see there, much like an artist would draw a sketch of a still life. You can even add characters, personification, whatever.
Also, try to find a good critical community. I don't know that much about this site yet, so I can't speak on its behalf, but my stuff is posted on my deviantart page located somewhere on my personal page (since I don't have 15 posts yet, I can't put it here). They're really good about copyright protection and they've got a great critical community. My biggest beef with them, though, is that they're secular and take a secular approach to the art community, so be careful when you're browsing the rest of the deviantart site.
At any rate, I'm willing to help you out if you want it. While at this point in time, I don't have time to actually be anyone's "mentor," but I don't think it would hurt if I gave critical suggestions and little proddings from time to time.
Hope it all goes well.
Peace!
