Good time of year to discuss this.
How did Mary or Miriam know what the angel meant when he said that the Holy Spirit would come upon her?

And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33
And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34
Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the (miraculous) power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

What would a young girl know about the Holy Spirit? Was it even discussed back then?

And just a note, the 'overshadowing' is the same as described at the 'transfiguration' where Yeshua meets with Eliyahu and Moses and the three disciples are terrified, I wonder if Miriam was as well?

I can't pretend to an answer to your second question, but as to how she knew what the angel meant...I don't know that she did, considering her response: “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.”

She seems to accept what's been told to her, but doesn't reply with any specifics.

That is: it seems she understood the gist of it (baby in some way from God), but as to "exactly" what was meant...I don't know.

Mary was not just any "young girl". Even as Christ is the "Lamb slain from the foundation of the world", she is the holy vessel prepared from the foundation of the world, to be she who bore God in her womb and to be primary caregiver of God in the flesh, in his infancy.

Mary was a temple virgin, which means that she had literally lived at the temple in Jerusalem as a maidservant there, rather than with her parents, Joachim and Anna. Serving at the temple she would have been continuously exposed to the daily cycle of chantings of the Scripture (probably the Psalms). By the agency of the Holy Spirit, Who was continuously keeping her by His grace, she would have come to be in possession of great spiritual enlightenment so as to understand that the Archangel was of God, rather than an evil deceiving spirit (fallen angel) and also to know the experience of the fullness of the Holy Spirit coming upon and overshadowing her. And yes, it likely was an experience like that of the Transfiguration. This experience is not alien to many saints in the Church of the New Testament. Mary is the greatest of the saints of the Church, and would not have lacked this experience of the Illuminating Light of the Holy Spirit.
