• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

i need help for my one friend. he's a year older than me and has no alcohol problem of his own, but his parents do. his mum and dad drink a lot and fight a lot and his dad often beats them around. they're the typical German stereotypes though... extremely proud and stubborn.

i don't want him in that house, it's breaking him. he's got a younger brother (16) and two younger sisters (one 9, one 2) and he takes so much stress. we got his parents to go see a social worker but that's the most they'll do, and it doens't seem to be helping much.

what can i do? he's scared to death that he'll be like them one day. he's so special to me. maybe too special.

Help for the relatives and friends of alcoholics can be found through Alanon, ACOA and Alateen. They may have meetings in your area where you will find people who are living in similar circumstances but have found a way to cope.

Alateen is a fellowship of young Al-Anon members, usually teenagers, whose lives have been affected by someone's else's drinking.
*Purposes of Alateen Young People Come Together To:

.share experience, strength and hope with each other.
.discuss their difficulties.
.learn effective ways to cope with their problems.
.encourage one another.
.help each other understand the principles of the Al-Anon program.

Hi. That is a very difficult situation.

You can pray. You can listen and show you are supportive. I'm sure you're doing that already. And it really helps our friends to know they aren't alone. Try to keep your friend positive. Let him know there is always a way out and that sometimes it just takes time to find it. Reassure him that he doesn't have to become like his father.

I'll pray. There's always a way out.
