  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was just watching repeat episodes of the TV show "Hoarders". I don't know how many of you have seen it, but it's pretty incredible the filth and disorganization these people live in.

My home is not dirty, per se, but it is pretty full of "stuff". I really should get rid of things, but I live in quite a small mobile home and I feel like everything I have here is necessary - there's just no room for it. If I could afford a storage unit, I would get one. But I can't.

How clean is your home? By clean I'm referring to both actual cleanliness and also organization. Do you have too many belongings? And if so, are there things that you should get rid of but choose not to for whatever reason?

I have too many things but haven't had time to thin out since moving here a couple years ago. My goal is to dive in head first after I graduate next month.

My ultimate goal after my kids leave home in a couple years is to be able to fit my life in a single UHaul trailer. I want to be able to move as God calls and I have learned that moving into a furnished apartment or buying discount/thrift store furniture is cheaper than paying to have it moved. I don't want to be tied to "things".

My weakness is books...and stupid nicknacks that I tie to memories.

Did you have to start this thread right after I decided not to clean my house this weekend? LOL

My house is slightly messy because I have teenage boys, but also my room needs cleaned. It's not hoarderville but I would rather have everything put away and it's not

lol Michelle ^_^ Although it may seem like that, I only thought to start it after watching a few episodes of Hoarders. Don't feel bad about your house. It can't be worse than the ones on the show! One guy had so many rats that he let them take over the house and adopted them all as pets. You couldn't even see the parts of the floor that weren't covered with stuff because they were covered in rat droppings!

When my wife asked me to move out of the house I rented a room for 4 yrs. So there wasn't much room to hoard stuff.
3 years ago I bought a 2 unit home with detached garage. I have a lot more tools now, but they are mostly in their place. I have brought about all I need to cook, so not likely to over flow the Kitchen cabinets. My walls are pretty sparse as I never can get motivated to put up pictures. I hang about one per year. So it will take forever to fill the walls.
I do have too many old clothes, so I should get rid of some of those.

I watch hoarders when I clean. It makes it easier to let go of things.

Messiness isn't these people's problem though. They all have some sort of tragedy in their lives that makes them attach to belongings. They are looking for love through items because people have let them down. Some are hiding behind the items. Some cling to memories through the items. Some just get a "high" when they buy them and feel "love". It is a mental illness, not a choice.

That is a good idea to watch it when you clean. Never thought of that before. I realize that *most* of the cases of extreme hoarding are caused by mental illness or grief. I saw one the other day where this poor woman lost her husband and two sons within a short period of time and she began hoarding to stave off the grief. So sad :(

Some of these people are just severely lonely...the items replace people and relationships.

The animal horders really do believe they are saving the animals because they love them even if they are not capable of caring for them properly.

These are the people that the church needs to be visiting...but quite often, we can't get past their "uniqueness" and "prickles". We only want "pretty", fixed people at church.

At the moment things are a grand mess. Been trying to multi-task by decluttering, rearranging furniture, getting rid of old stuff, and cleaning the carpets by over lapping tasks. Of course the carpet cleaner broke down and took several hours to fix. I'll get this mess tamed at some point.

My house constantly looks like it was just hit by a category 5 tornado. And it's just me living here so that's pretty bad.
^_^ Mine doesn't. Once a week when my father comes visit it is kinda clean, well at least I think it's clean. He didn't, 'cause he saw some paint on the walls, glad he didn't come a day earlier, I let the kids play with finger paint, it was just ALL over the floor, footsteps with blue and red paint, a black painting on the wall which I painted over just in time before he came. Oh well.
