  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ecumenical optimists believe that Christians must find ways in which they agree with the other guys and build on those. Ecumenical partisans believe that Christians can’t find such agreements-not meaningful ones, anyway- and must maintain the space between themselves and the other guys. Both get it right and get it wrong...

What if we worked together to be the hands of Christ (corporal and spiritual works of mercy)? When I’ve served at homeless shelters or done mission trips I was able to follow Christ without talking once about theology or interpretation of sacred scripture. There are some notable differences but instead of facing each other and arguing we could lock arms and face outward towards the world to serve others in need. Just a thought.

I'll believe in the sincerity of the desire for unity when Protestants, Pentecostals, and Charismatics can freely participate in the Eucharist in a Catholic church without having to accept a "blessing" instead.

I was recently at a Requiem Mass for a family friend. The priest, in his comments, made it clear that he did not consider non-Catholics to be real Christians. I don't think that there can be any unity when that attitude still exists.

It’s not that he does not consider you real Christians. It’s test he dies not know if you believe you are partaking if the Bidy and Blood of Christ. It’s a charitable act.

Yeah...right.
Well all you have to do is read up on it. It’s true. Has nothing to do with thinking you are a Christian or not. Lol!

My wife's cousin is a Catholic priest. I'll ask him next time I see him.

What I get from the video is that the priest is assuming that the Catholic church is the only really true church right from the First Century AD. I don't believe that, although I can't say why on this particular forum.

Well there you go. You are imperfectly united with the Church. It does not mean you are not Christian. Talk to the priest in your family. He’ll help you.

You should instead of thinking the worst.
I'm rather limited in why I believe that the Catholic church is not the true church and that according to Catholic belief unity can only be achieved by other churches adopting the Catholic faith - because I am on the Catholic forum.

Ok. You made your point. Talk to the priest in your family.

I belief that the only way I could ever be in unity with the Catholic church and be seen in their eyes as a true Christian would be to convert to Catholicism.

Well you are mistaken so I do not know what to tell you. Catholics do not teach other Christians are not true Christians. Just imperfectly united. Let’s not derail the thread further.

I've brought up the question on another forum so there can be a more comprehensive discussion without violating this forum's rules.

I’ve told you all you need to know from a Catholic POV. Good luck.
