how can i make myself desire God above all things. I try, try, and try, but I'm not interested

Then, you need to be Born Again. That is, you first need to follow the passage i have in my signature below and meaning it very very sincerely, then leaving all known lifestyle sin youre in, and entering practices that will help you to grow in Christ including love for him -- some of the more vital ones are : Regular Bible Study alone and with others in a group, attend a local Protestant Church regularly, start serving God and Others when opportunities present themselves , regularly attend a Christian SIngles Ministry if you are single , and get deep with God in prayer several times per day.

Thats what you must do. But you have to want to do that . If you wish to remain uninterested in God, then you will only have condemnation to look forward to especially right after you die to this short earthly life which could be at any moment in reality. Regards.

*It's a process..
That comes from steadily building a personal relationship
with God...which starts with you being in submission to God
and honoring His Word.

Oh my. I know this feeling all too well. Prayers to you.

The hardest thing after Salvation, for me, was fully surrendering my trust that God would do good things in me and through me. I had to lay even my desire to serve Him at the Cross and allow Him to do the work. It was hard, but infinitely worth it!

There is no set "laundry list" you have to complete in order to reach this point, in order to be saved. And frankly, none of us here are in any position to judge you or your salvation, that is God's job.

I don't know what you're dealing with or facing in this life, but I do know this. Often times, God must break us down before He can build us up. He cannot work with a stubborn, proud heart that is hardened by sin. No, He needs soft, humble hearts, that are like clay in the Potter's hands. I had to be humbled before Him, I had to reach the point where I realized I was nothing without Him.

I believe we all have to reach this point in our spiritual journey at some point. God does not want half-hearted attempts. He says we need to seek Him with all our heart.

Thanks for asking this, it's a great question and to me it shows that you're at least genuine in your interest about this. I'll be praying for you

Rubiks, it's wonderful that you're trying - that's your goal. I would urge you to study the names, titles, and attributes of G_d. You might want to use the numerous websites that have some listed and you could compile a comprehensive list. For my master list, I referenced the websites I used and only used those with Scriptural basis.

God knows that when it comes down to a choice, I will chose Him over anything else. He made sure I know that during the warfare. Having said that, I have my own desires/wants/needs which I'm unsure whether God wants me to have. I do know however that I need to seek His presence, so I'm currently making a deliberate conscious effort to seek Him through prayer/worshipping Him etc. I pray that He will put the right people in my path to help me in my bible study, walk with Him, my growth as a human being and a Christian. I pray that I grow in my spiritual maturity. I think I'm beginning to get a glimpse/understanding that its decisions that we made in life such as putting a conscious effort to seek Him that He will then help us and our conscious effort to develop spiritual discipline--to feed the soul/spirit so that our spirit is strengthened. James 4:8 Come near to God and He will come near to you.

Hope this helps

Past memories of failure, violence and that ever-present poverty are challenges that's definitely like an endless journey that seems to stretch itself way ahead of you so you won't reach your final destination or accomplish your future goals.:
Jesus had to be accepted in my life to overcome these seemingly impossible challenges, and since accepting him at 17, I have been surviving in one of the "most civilized" multicultural nations known as Australia .:
The Christian churches around Australia act like a comfortable pillow to cushion your feelings of depression and loneliness. It's as if this huge mountainous, painful pile of memories all multiplied by Christ's zero painless healing equals peace, love and joy - once you start traveling from your home to the place of worship on a frequent basis.:
Satan, being the central obstacle course during our life journeys, will try to create potholes to stop us from being hopeful and faithful in our Lord Savior, to become "sick and tired of hearing all this crap" spiritual exercise where miracles happen only to those at the right time and in the right conditions - just like growing a healthy bunch of glowing red roses in a bucket-size flower pot in your garden.:
Our silent Earth's blue sky and starry night sky that take turns each passing day, can leave an expectancy of "nothing happening yet" as we believers of Christ patiently wait for his second coming return, that would definitely transform our feelings and our bodies to the fullness of Christ where ultimate health, beauty and intelligence will give us the best and ultimate social lifestyle as we live together in peace inside the lonely-proof green and clean city of free accommodation and free health meals: the kingdom of God on a new disaster-free Earth .;'*';.

Rubiks, it's wonderful that you're trying - that's your goal. ....

Rubiks said that he/she is not interested in desiring God .. so im wondering how you arrived at him/her trying ????

If im not interested in cleaning my room, then Im not really trying am I (?) To 'try at something' means the person is willfully making proactice strides at trying to accomplish something ... and that requires a degree of being genuinely interested from the start . If a person isnt interested in desiring God, then such a person is wrestling with pride and/or arrogance plus rebellion --- in such a case, the person would want to admit this to themselves, confess this to God, then ask God to stir ones heart and soul for the things of God in conjunction with the person cooperating in the process , dont you think so ?

What I did was constantly immerse myself in "Christian" things. I only listened to Christian music, I got involved in Church-building(note the capital "C"), and other God-related activities. It was hard at first, but God slowly became my focus. Just remember to always have love, as without it, you are nothing but a clanging cymbal.

The desire for God comes from God. God does not expect we will muster up an interest in Him on our own. We are too self-centered to do so. Paul the apostle wrote,

Romans 7:18
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

The prophet Jeremiah states things more strongly:

Jeremiah 17:9
9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?

If one is not born again, one is dead in trespasses and sins, blind to God's love and truth, unable to move toward Him or even to desire Him. If this is where you are, the only One who can help you is God.

I think it is evidence of God moving in you that you feel you ought to desire Him. Ask God to continue to expand your interest in Him and to cause you to love Him. As Paul wrote, it is God who gives each of us both the ability and the desire to do His will. (Phil. 2:13) And above all else, God wills that we would love Him.

I am interested in desiring god, however that interest is not very strong. I want it to be stronger.

Can i ask what you have done / are doing currently to fan the flame for God ? Also, what are you doing to eliminate anything that is in competition for your time, interest, zeal for God ? Are there any Idols standing in the way ? If you have an interest in a particular Science (such as Astronomy, Cosmology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc...) , have you read Christian literature that highlights Gods design and nature thru these which would naturally lead to an awe of Gods majesty ? What has been your participation in Christian Circles like a Youth Group or Adult Singles Ministry which would allow others to speak into you the things of God ? Do you have a declining interest in other things / most things ? And finally, how is your feeling of wellbeing....do you struggle with OCD , Depression, Anxiety, or Attention Deficit Disorder ? Lastly, have you made a clean break with the World and its philosophies/influences because if you havent, then your loyalty cant go to both them and God.

Could you give some short answers to the above questions ? Thanks.

Im wondering why you didnt address the other questions ? As for going to church, dont use Mom sleeping in till 1 pm as an excuse for not going to church which will deepen your relationship with God --- if you cant drive yet then there is walking, biking , riding along with a nearby Friend , or even asking the local Church if there is someone who can pick you up and return you to home after the service (many Churches have Vans for this very purpose) . You see...where there is A WILL, there is a way. Its all left up to you. You have to make it happen and it takes a little bit of assertiveness.

Hello Rubiks I think that I see what you mean, if you ever watched Saint Francis, you can hear the following speech:

I also want to tell you that there is something called the spiritual adolescence that may be temporary for a lot of people however a strong flame in a person and a commitment and a seriousness can also be a real indication that it is not a spiritual crisis.

I do not tell you to not not desire God more, if that is what you want nothing can take it from you, I advise you that you speak with someone where you are that can advise you he/she will be a better help of course

how can i make myself desire God above all things. I try, try, and try, but I'm not interested

You remind me about a lot that the Lord was not the number one in their life, he was a everything in their life and Paul said: Colossians 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

I like to say a small wisdom, I should not mingle the words good christians and better christians with the word perfect christians, the perfect christian in his own eyes considers himself that he reached the perfection while look at what Paul that had great miracles in his life and who had surpassingly great revelations look at what he said:

Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Wow with all the gifts in his life of Paul he considered himself that he did not arrive yet and that is like he had nothing, how much humble was that that he did not exalt himself.

So when you try and try and try that is what it should be, if I bear fruit like Jesus told us I should not consider myself that I bear anything yet, not of denial at all but out of the humiliation to the will of the Lord that works in us and through us.

Rubiks, don't think that you have to perfect. Because none of us are, or ever will be. Not in this life at least. Don't think to be a good Christian you have to check off a list of things to do, clubs to join, charities to donate to. All of our walks of faith are different. God doesn't have the same plan for every single person. That would be boring.

At first, my interest for God was pretty small, and what little interest that was there was purely out of selifshness ("Just tell me how to be saved, and then get out of my life") 6 months later, a desire for God had consumed me, eclipsing everything else that I used to value. It takes time to mature in your faith, I still have so long to go, and so many things to learn. I'm no better than you, God loves you just as much as anyone else on these forums.

Do not think for an instance that you have to earn His love by doing a bunch of little good deeds. The point here is, geunine love for God will make you WANT to serve Him. The desire to serve has to be there.

Dear Rubiks. Jesus told us to Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds. ( Matthew 22: 35-40God also told us to love our neighbour as ourselves. If you start to love your neighbour, ( all you know and all you meet) as you love yourself, God will see and God will bless you.
God knows that you love God with all your beings, If you follow His Commandments to Love and Care. Jesus will give you His Love and Joy, and the Holy Spirit will empower you with His Love, also. You only have to ask, and you will receive. ( Matthew 7: 7-8 Then thank God for answering your prayer, and share your Love and Joy with your neighbour. You might stumble and forget some times, but then ask God to forgive you, and carry on Loving and Caring. Keep asking God and thanking God, then share all Love and Joy with your neighbour. People around you will notice and people will treat you the same, Love is very catching, and God is Love and God wants loving children/sons and daughters.
The Bible tells us to " Be Reborn," to change from being selfish and unloving, to becoming Loving and Caring men and women. Jesus our Saviour will help and guide you: JESUS IS THE WAY. You will find that your life is changing to
" Life Abundant," as Jesus promised. You will also find that you Love God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
I say this with love, Rubiks. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.

I don’t think you can make yourself desire God. I think the more you learn of Him, the more you desire Him.

Jesus said:
Mat 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Mat 11:29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
Mat 11:30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

God is not a hard task master but you won’t know that if you don’t learn of Him. When was the last time you read the Gospel (Matthew, Mark, Luke , & John) with an attitude of just wanting to know Him? To know what He said/did, His attitudes, how He dealt with conflict, etc. Aren’t there questions you have for God? If so why not ask Him the questions? Tell Him what you think and then see what the Word says about it all?

What I know is that you can go to God and tell Him what’s going on. You can ask God to give you a hunger and thirst for Him and He will. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you as you do what you know to do (praying, reading the Word, helping others). God is faithful. He will help you, especially seeing how your struggle is in desiring Him.

Also being Saved isn’t rules and regulations. God desires YOU. He desires to share Himself with you and for you to share yourself with Him. I’d like to share a really good resource with you called SermonIndex.net. There are some wonderful sermons (sound doctrine) there that you can download or listen to on line.

What a precious young man you are. What you’re going through right now is only temporary. You hold on to God. Please stay encouraged and I’ll be praying for you.
