Someone who is a sincere Christian for some time told me recently they are not convinced they are saved and worry about it a lot.
I think this is a very good question and I realised it probably took a lot of courage to say this to someone else. I would like to give them a very good reply and would appreciate some assistance.
The issue is what Calvin I believe called the "third use of the law" - Christian behaviour. The New Testament actually gives a very high standard for what God requires. This is great when we initially come to Jesus knowing we cannot save ourselves, but then as Christians we read "if you love me keep my commandments", and I am not really specifically talking about the Old Testament law, but the (new) commandment to love one another.
As Christians do we really show the sort of love Jesus was talking about? Do you still lose your temper? Do you still find yourself joining in gossip or laughing at inappropriate jokes?
Perhaps many Christians don't worry about if they are really saved, but for others - who know their Bible - it can be a worry. Faith without works is dead, a tree is known by its fruits, "my father cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit".
So how do we know if we are producing enough fruit?
I have some ideas but I would like to hear other comments first. Also I would like to hear Bible quotes to justify what you say - don't just give me your opinions!
