  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

It provides school vouchers to parents which they can use to send their children to schools, public or private, and repeals a nutritional standard in school lunches.

The first part is hotly debated, I'm on the fence personally.

The second part is probably bad for kids honestly, we already have enough problems with weight and diabetes.

text:

This bill repeals the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and limits the authority of the Department of Education (ED) such that ED is authorized only to award block grants to qualified states.

The bill establishes an education voucher program, through which each state shall distribute block grant funds among local educational agencies (LEAs) based on the number of eligible children within each LEA's geographical area. From these amounts, each LEA shall: (1) distribute a portion of funds to parents who elect to enroll their child in a private school or to home-school their child, and (2) do so in a manner that ensures that such payments will be used for appropriate educational expenses.

To be eligible to receive a block grant, a state must: (1) comply with education voucher program requirements, and (2) make it lawful for parents of an eligible child to elect to enroll their child in any public or private elementary or secondary school in the state or to home-school their child.

No Hungry Kids Act

The bill repeals a specified rule that established certain nutrition standards for the national school lunch and breakfast programs. (In general, the rule requires schools to increase the availability of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat or fat free milk in school meals; reduce the levels of sodium, saturated fat, and trans fat in school meals; and meet children's nutritional needs within their caloric requirements.)

IT establishes a voucher program in the form of block grants to the states. The funds are to be distributed based on the number of students in each area.
The block grants are then issued as a voucher, that each parent can use to pay for their public or private school of choice or to home school.

The Bill would also repeal any/all nutritional standards for school lunch programs.

I don't think what was in place was helping in that area.

Any idea on the amount of a voucher, personally I really dislike our public schools (mainly the admin) and would relish in putting our kids in a private school.

OPINION: It is an effort to undermine the public school system, so that it ultimately fails. When that happens, only those who can afford private school will get an education. [/OPINION]

My opinion and in experience is that these public school teachers care on the surface but truly don't put forth the effort in helping kids that need it.

I did not see an amount listed.
However, since this a measure designed to CUT the amount of Federal money going to the schools - [opinion] it would likely be less than the amount being sent to the public school system(s) and hardly enough to make a dent in private school tuition. Even if it were, the private institution would then raise tuition rates to keep undesirables out. [/opinion]

My experience is most of them care a large amount. I just don't like tenure because it helped keep one horrible teacher in my elementary school for years before they finally got rid of her. Woman was nuts. To give an idea she used to drive around with a doll in her car and would insist when other people rode with her that the doll got the front seat. She was a couple cans short of a 6 pack.

I feel like are better ways to foster competition. It just seems like this will make poor schools even poorer.

Basically more tax dollars going rich parents who were already sending their kids to private schools, at least if the pattern holds with previous versions of the same idea.

As stated, it would remove the ability of the public schools to oversee and solely determine what students should learn.

As for destroying the public school system, good. The taxes used to support public schools would not be collected allowing families to spend the money where they decide the money should be best spent.

And I agree, some people would waste the money. Probably the same people who don't care if their children get an education now. Face it; some folks cannot be helped by a government program.

I have had some acquaintanceship with private and charter schools and most of the kids are far from being members of wealthy families.

It's not an anecdote if its been observed personally.
That is actually the very definition of anecdotal:

not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research
