There was once a very good minister of the Word, who was fond of this text, and he often repeated it to himself.
He was a very clever and wise man, he feared that he might become proud and so offend God.
So he obtained a wine-glass without a foot, and around the rim he had these words written," Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe."
This wine-glass was placed on his writting table, where he could see it at all times.
This was a kind of picture of himself, to remind him that without God he could do nothing good.
The wine-glass, if held in its master's hand, would hold what was placed within it, and so become useful.
But if ever it tried to stand on its own, it would fall over, and spill its contents.
