  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Have you watched "High Anxiety", the Hitchcock spoof by Mel Brooks?
It's an awesome parody of several Hitchcock films all rolled into one. Absolutely brilliant

What an awesome film! Saw it today for the third time at a Christian social gathering.
I think I read recently that Vertigo has risen faster in people's estimation than any other and is now in the 'top ten' best films of all time.

Yes incredibility good as were many of Hitchcock's films. Vertigo is I think my favourite. Own a copy of it. Probably watch it once a year.

Vertigo had so many good things going for it. Very well cast with James Stewart, Kim Novak and other greats. Fantastic story and one other thing seldom mentioned the sound track (background music) composed by Bernard Herrmann absolutely brilliant.

I've tried watching Vertigo a few times over the years and simply cannot get into it. It feels like it plods along at such a slow pace that just bores me to the point of turning it off after twenty minutes or so. Personally, I consider Psycho his masterpiece (have seen it maybe 15 times - no I'm not exaggerating) but also think Rope is genius with its editing. It's definitely an underrated classic. I find The Birds interesting when viewed as a commentary on relationships between women, women and men, and a man and his mother (know I'm not talking about Norman Bates! ^_^)

Vertigo scores because of how well each scene is constructed and the clever use of thematic colours (green, red), symbols (flowers, Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower). I learned recently that in the driving scenes when Scottie is following Madeleine he is nearly always driving downhill: falling->falling in love. He puts a small flower in Judy Barton's buttonhole but it is much less than the Madeleine/Carlotta flower spray symbolizing the inferiority of their relationship to his love for the imaginary Madeleine.

It is a dark film with so-called good guy Scottie embracing his recreation of what he believes is a dead woman - at the climax of Herrmann's score. The scene by the Golden Gate Bridge is just so dramatic (not the obvious swimming pool - well the water there must have been heavily polluted then). Will he finally settle down with Midge and her domestic set of copperware?
