High speed Vehicle plows into Christmas parade killing marchers

Brayden Kowalski, a 19-year-old man who grew up in Waukesha, said that he was at the parade with his family when he saw an SUV accelerate through the crowd.

"He’s just blowing through people, kind of just dinging a lot of people, bodies flying everywhere,” Kowalski said. "These people didn’t get run over, they got f------ thrown through the air. Like a lot of people got tossed up into the air.”

Almost immediately after the SUV went through the crowd, Kowalski and his mom went out into the crowd to try to help people who were hurt. "You could see the fragments of brains,” he said. "There were quite a few people with broken limbs, like a lot of broken legs, a lot of people shouting with broken legs. It was horrifying.”

Kowalski grew up in Waukesha, a town of about 70,000 people. "This is the most peaceful loving town. Everyone is so friendly,” Kowalski said. "I know people say, ‘You would never expect this to happen here.' But this is one of those towns. You would have never thought this would happen.

Multiple people were killed after an SUV plowed into crowds at a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, Sunday night, officials said.

City and law enforcement officials just gave an update on the incident. Many details are still unclear, but here's what we know so far:

• "Some fatalities": Both Police Chief Dan Thompson and Fire Chief Steven Howard said there were "some fatalities" after a red SUV slammed into crowds at the parade. Neither official gave an exact number, and Howard noted, "we do not have any detailed information on the fatalities at this time."
• 23 people taken to hospitals: At least 11 adults and 12 pediatric patients were taken to six Waukesha-area hospitals following the incident, Howard said. He said officials did not have specific information about any of the injuries at this time.
• A person of interest is in custody: Thompson said a "person of interest" is in custody following the parade crash. Earlier in the day, he told reporters that officials had recovered the suspected vehicle.
• An officer tried to stop the SUV: Thompson noted that one police officer discharged his weapon at the suspect's vehicle to try and stop it. "No bystanders were injured by a result of the weapon discharge," Thompson said.

The man being questioned after a red SUV plowed through Waukesha's Christmas parade, killing at least five people and injuring dozens, has been identified as Darrell E. Brooks Jr., a Milwaukee man with a criminal history dating back to 1999 that includes numerous violent felonies.

Multiple senior law enforcement sources told Fox News that the 39-year-old longtime felon was being questioned in connection with the attack.

Police said early Monday that a red SUV plowed into pedestrians Sunday evening, killing five and injuring at least 40 more. Some of the victims were children.

He has a long rap sheet and a number of pending cases. Brooks’ most recent court appearance came on Nov. 5 for charges including reckless endangerment, battery, domestic abuse, resisting arrest and bail jumping. He was out on $1,000 bail for those charges at the time of the attack.
