• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi All,

I was very excited to see a forum for autism and aspergers.

I am a Medicaid Service Coordinator in NY, and I have quite a few children and adults who I work with who are somewhere on the autism spectrum.

I just thought I would throw that out there as I love to learn more, especially from parents, so I can better serve the individuals and families I work with.

Be Blessed!

Jessa137,
There is a suprising ammount you could learn from taking the time to talk to and learn from autistics rather than just their parents and the so-called "experts" claiming to represent them. Plese PM me and I'll talk to you about it more.

So how can we 'individuals' serve you? We Aspies (ASDs) are capable of communication even with you NT's:thumbsup: .
Some of us are good enough at it to work and are active in representing those who choose to be less communicative with none aspies.

Jessa,

Change non verbal to poor communicators who choose not to verbalise.

Some of the people responding here rarely verbalise but that does not mean that those with Autism are incapable. Sometimes thanks to proffesionals telling parents what to do ASDs go through hell.

Holding theraphy anyone or how about how to be a trained parrot to make your parent feel better because you were not the child they ordered?

Can I suggest you start with the disability action groups writings to get the hang of the social model of disability instead of the dehumanising medical one.

Thank you Mirelys! I had no intention of hurting anyone's feelings, and I sincerely apologize if I did. I am more used to working with the parents because many of the individuals I work with are children. I apologize for using the term "non-verbal." It is a term used in the field I work in. I am sorry that it offended anyone.
