Just one question..... What is systematic theology ???

Happy Birthday, Antman!

My son is taking Systematic Theology in school this year and he says the definition is, "Follows a scheme of doctrinal development which incorporates into its system all truth about God from any and every source."

I use Wayne Grudem's book quite a bit. I agree with most of it, though not all. One of the big ones is in eschatology, but he does show each side of the matter fairly before defining his preference. Also, I don't see eschatology as a major doctrine to define one's standing before God. It is also a reason I dislike dispensationalism. If the eschatology falls, the whole thing falls. Thus, I avoid Lewis Sperry Chafer's collection that my dad has.

That is the only one I have. Each chapter contains a hymn that highlights the study and some other good stuff. There's a review on it here: http://www.readnreap.net/archives/2005/01/systematic_theo_1.html

Would any others care to say what ones they have and what they like about them?

I have heard the term used in two different ways. In Sydney Anglican circles we are quite big in the area of biblical theology - Graham Goldsworthy has written extensively in this area. That being the unfolding nature of the bible, following the themes through. Reading the NT in light of the OT. Reading the OT in light of the cross, etc. Promises to Abraham being quite central to the whole thing.

In light of this systematic theology is used to describe taking a theme and looking at it with biblical theology in mind. So it might be something like looking at what the bible has to say on the bodily resurrection, or sin, or something like that.

But I have also heard the term systematic theology used to describe what we call biblical theology.

I have a great love of biblical theology btw - and the OT in general.

Charles Hodge's is among the most revered. I can personally recommend Reymond's. Others to consider are Hoeksema (Reformed Dogmatics), Berkhof, Bavinck (Reformed Dogmatics), Turrentin (Institutes of Eclentic Theology), Calvin of course, and Muller (Post-Reformation Reformed Dogmatics).

Soli Deo Gloria
