  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

To understand Dutch Reformed thought and theology it's required reading...I'd think. Bavinck is a master of declaring doctrine. You suggested Hoeksema's Dogmatics to me in the past, but after re-reading sections of Bavinck, I don't think I'll need any other as I'm still gleaning fruit from the works I have.

Peace,

jm
PS: Dr. Joel Beeke was involved with this work and I've come to trust the man's writings. You can download his sermons from SermonAudio.com.

That is up to you. However I think Hoeksema made some great advances upon the doctrine of the covenant. In his Reformed Dogmatics it runs to 80pages which I really would suggest however he covers similar material in Believers and their Seed.

Beeke is not too bad, the Netherlands Reformed Churches seem to be OK however they do not quite grasp the covenantal argument for paedobaptism. See here.

I'm still a fan of HH's work so it's not out of the question for the distant future.

Beeke is not bad...he's a spiritual GIANT! His work has affected me in many ways. It's odd the link you posted mentions Hebrews 8 which uses the term covenants and not administrations...this is often a "baptistic" proof text for their understanding of the covenant. I'd suggest John Owen's exposition on Hebrews 8.

Peace,

jm

It's important to make a distinction between Netherlands Reformed Churches, and Heritage Netherlands Reformed Church where Beeke co-pastors, they are separate. Beeke was defrocked from the Netherlands Reformed Churches for preaching free grace. The church he is at now, Heritage Netherlands Reformed, is part of the Heritage Reformed Congregations.

Thanks for the heads up Goon, I'm not familiar with the details, could you fill me in?

Westminster Confession of Faith
Chapter XI
Of Justification
IV. God did, from all eternity, decree to justify all the elect,[11] and Christ did, in the fullness of time, die for their sins, and rise again for their justification:[12] nevertheless, they are not justified, until the Holy Spirit does, in due time, actually apply Christ unto them.[13]

[13] COL 1:21 And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled 22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight. GAL 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. TIT 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, 5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; 6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; 7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
