  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What are some books that you have come across that really helped out your relationship?  Maybe they helped YOU change and thereby made your relationship stronger.

My favorites are:

Men Are From Mars Women Are From Venus by John Gray As cheesy as the concept is, I was enlightened about how men and women think differently

Boundaries by Henry Cloud.  There are several Boundaries books, but this first one helped me stop being such a doormat

There are others, but that is a start.  Got any to add?

Love's Unseen Enemy by Dr. Les Parrott

This book is amazing! Would recommend it to anyone who is struggling in a relationship or wants to make sure they have or will have a healthy one.

Talks on many issues but the big one being guilt which is one of the biggest problems in relationships.

"The 5 Love Languages" Id say helps make a person more aware of the other person and their feelings.

A book that has helped me lots to better understand not just roles, but also the entire idea of chastity (which doesnt just involve no premarital sex), was Good News About Sex and Marriage, by Christopher West.

A good study on the Song of Solomon will amaze you at how much useful information is in it. It's the dating and marriage manual we all overlook.

As far as changing goes, you should desire to make changes in your life, or who you are based on the issues you want to resolve in yourself as a person. We all have some to work through when we're young and even continue to struggle with some through the years to come. Don't try and become someone you are not to suit the needs of someone else. Become the complete person you are supposed to be and then find the person who appreciates who you are.
Did that make any sense?

I read probably about the first half of The Power of a Praying Wife before I loaned it to someone going through a tough time in their marriage. It was a pretty good book, practical in what it had you pray about, but a little simplistic at times I thought.

My husband and I have quite a few relationship books, although we haven't made it all the way through most of them.

The Five Love Languages; His Needs, Her Needs; Why Marriages Succeed or Fail (and How You Can Make Yours Last); Romancing Your Husband (That's a really good one!); Every Woman's Desire (you'd have to ask my husband about that one ;) )

Speed Seduction manual by Ross Jeffries, WARNING secular in nature but worth the read as it deals with human nature and how to use it to get what you want.
I would like to anti-recommend this. It is contrary to anything respectful and loving in a relationship. Anyone who doubts me, do a search on google.

I agree with the Five Love Languages mentioned twice earlier.

Ouch! It is merely a book of wisdom pertaining to relationships, specifically men relating to women. Personally it has saved me money, time, heart ache, and contributed to keeping my marriage intact. While the knowledge may be used irresponsibly it can be used for good by Christians.

Kinda sounds like underhanded manipulation to me. Shouldn't you be thinking about what the other person wants in the relationship, not just what you want?

My wife is the most happily married woman I know because I know how to treat her. Can your husband say that?

Desi,
You have some very strange ideas indeed about women, love, and life. So whether your wife is the most happily married woman ever, or whether she has developed a lot of patience over the last 9 years for some of your wacky ideas about submission and manipulation is up for debate. No offense. And by the way, welcome back from that trip you went on. I at least appreciate that you are open and honest in your opinions even if sometimes they make no sense. You at least seem to have good intentions.
