Good grief.

My scanner is not working & I got 4 pages on both sides listing mortal & venial sins with explainations. I'm going to see if I kind find this on the internet.

This would take forever to type out.

So have you got enough info Warriorangel?

I got a very detailed list with explainations but the typing would be killer.

I'll type out a small explaination on the difference on venial vs mortal-

Mortal Sins
Three things are necessary for a sin to be mortal:

1- Serious matter (things listed on this sheet);

2- Knowledge or firm belief that the act is seriously wrong prior to committing the act;

3- Full consent of the will.

All three of these conditions must be present simultaneously for a sin to be mortal. This means if you did not know the act was seriously wrong, then you are not guilty of performing a mortal sin. If you did not will the act, e.g., if you were forced or it was a dream, you are not guilty of having committed a mortal sin. All mortal sins committed since your last confession must be confessed by both type and number, i.e., the title of the sin and how many times it was done. If there is a mortal sin from the past that was forgotten and has not been confessed, it should be confessed at your next confession. It is not necessary to confess venial sins but it is a good and pious practice.

Venial Sins and imperfections

Imperfections are not sins so they do not need to be confessed. No distinction is made on this sheet between venial sins and imperfections because it is not always easy to make the distinction. Some things are imperfections because they are very small, other things are imperfections because they are dispositions of the soul and not willful actions or failures, still others because they are habitual.

It goes on to lay out the 10 commandments.

Explains with each commandment how sin under that commandment could me mortal or venial.

Example-

I am the Lord your God. You shall not have strange gods before Me.

Mortal-
Involvement in occult practices, e.g., witchcraft, ouija boards, seances, palm reading, tarot cards, hypnotism, divination, astrology, black magic, sorcery, etc.

Venial under same commandment...

Venial-
Failing to seek out or learn teachings of the Church.

Not trying to grow spiritually; being content with mediocrity.

Etc.

Glad you found those links.

My typing fingers were cramping at the thought. :D

I have a new PM buddy who wonders what the lists are, and he would also like to know how we can discern them.

I listed a few, but would like some additional help. Thanks much!

Hey, WarriorAngel. I read the list posted below your first post. It was interesting and made things clear.

I see now that those sins you call mortal, mostly are sins that I consider sins. And that the sins you call venial, mostly are things that I not neccesarily call sins.

I think that it's good that you build most of these lists on the Ten Commandments, as those are biblical. But I would like to see where in the New Testament that the difference between "mortal" and "venial" sins are stated. As I can only find two different kinds of sins: namely, "blasphemy of the Holy Spirit", that cannot be forgiven, and "all other sins", that can be forgiven.

Also, it is so: that a catholic will be purged if he hasn't recieved forgiveness for a mortal sin when he dies, and that he will not be purged if he has not commited a mortal, but just a venial sin, when he dies?

Doesn't it feel a bit strange to live with the fear of purgatory, when Jesus took all sins on himself on the cross? Didn't Jesus say that it was fulfilled? And doesn't God say: "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool. Isa 1:18

I think that it's interesting to learn about the catholic faith.. but from what I've seen, I'm glad that I'm not a catholic..

but seriously.. this is my way: I want to believe in God, the Trinity.. I want to follow His commandments.. I want to be led by His Spirit daily.. if it really is true that the catholic church is the right church, and that ALL others are wrong.. I would like to become a catholic.. but only if the Word of God tells me to. ;)

Actually, if a person dies in the state of Mortal Sin, then that person will go to Hell, this is because Mortal Sin is a direct, willful separation of one's self from God, and His saving Grace. If one dies the state of Venial Sin, then he will be purged. As it has been stated, venial sins arise from imperfections, dispositions and habits. Purgatory is merely a state whereby we learn to let go of those dispositions, those habits, those imperfections. This life is part of purgatory. Only if one dies in the state of purity will one go immediately to heaven. These people are canonized by the Church and named Saints, but really they were saints in this life. That is, they came as close to perfection as one can in this life (through God's grace of course). Purgatory is merely the continuance of the purgation of this life. Except that in death, heaven is garanteed through purgatory (whereas the purgatory of this life is not secure). We do not look toward Purgatory with fear, we look toward Purgatory with hope and joy, for to be in Purgatory means eternal bliss is soon to be yours.

I am appalled that slavery is listed under "thou shalt not steal". That shows such a total lack of understanding of human dignity, that as far as I am concerned, it destroys the credibility of whoever wrote that list.

To think of slavery as merely "stealing someone's work" means you don't understand - or don't care - that a slave is deeply wounded in his dignity as human being. It is a sin against the commandment "thou shalt not kill", just as much as wilfully hurting someone, or bigotry (=thinking of someone as less of a human being than you), which are both listed under "thou shalt not kill".

By the way, listing "excessive tattoos" and "piercing nipples and sexual organs" is stupid. It would be justified only if these things concretely harmed any physical or sexual functions, or they were done in a spirit of disrespect for one's body or sexuality. But they are not. They are just silly fashions. To list them together with murder and racism, degrades murder and racism.

Hm.. ok.. thanks for explaining about the mortal vs venial thing.. it makes sence in a way..

but still.. I think that it's weird that you believe that it will be a purge.. as the Bible doesn't tell about it.. example: the story of Lasarus and the rich man - Lasarus went to a peaceful place, while the richman went to a place of pain.. and Abraham told the rich man that he could not go from the painful place to the other.. which removes the possibility that the rich man was purged before going to the good place.

"But Abraham replied, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.' Luke 16:25-26

The Bible says that no one can cross from the place of agony to the place of comfort, and vice versa.. that leaves out purgatory.

and also, the other example:

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as an expert builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple. 1 Cor 3:10-17

This speaks about the work we do for the Kingdom of God, and that it will be tested in the end. If it stands, we'll be rewarded, if it doesn't, we will not recieve the reward, but will still be saved ourselves. And it doesn't say that we will be purged, but that it will be as one escaping through flames. And in the verses just after that states that harming our bodies isn't right.

It's just strange I think.. this purge-thing... show me some biblical evidence on it people.. ;)

I'm headed straight for heaven.. I'm not going to be purged.. only spiritually throughout my life.. as I seek to become more like Jesus
