Actually, if a person dies in the state of Mortal Sin, then that person will go to Hell, this is because Mortal Sin is a direct, willful separation of one's self from God, and His saving Grace. If one dies the state of Venial Sin, then he will be purged. As it has been stated, venial sins arise from imperfections, dispositions and habits. Purgatory is merely a state whereby we learn to let go of those dispositions, those habits, those imperfections. This life is part of purgatory. Only if one dies in the state of purity will one go immediately to heaven. These people are canonized by the Church and named Saints, but really they were saints in this life. That is, they came as close to perfection as one can in this life (through God's grace of course). Purgatory is merely the continuance of the purgation of this life. Except that in death, heaven is garanteed through purgatory (whereas the purgatory of this life is not secure). We do not look toward Purgatory with fear, we look toward Purgatory with hope and joy, for to be in Purgatory means eternal bliss is soon to be yours.
