Hi, while cleaning out some old boxes I came across some prayer beads and wanted to know more about them. There are four groups of five beads on a chain loop attached to a heart centerpiece which has a crown of thorns on it and then a piece of chain with one bead and a saint medal for St. Rock.

Not quite sure what it is and where it came from. Thanks.

Edit: Oh I hope it is ok for me to post this here!

Welcome! You are allowed to ask questions & fellowship here. It sounds like you have a prayer chaplet. Maybe a St. Roch prayer chaplet. It is hard to tell without actually seeing it. Those chaplets if it is St. Roch are the harder ones to find.

It might be Paternoster beads. They are sometimes divided into sets of 5. It is not common but it is one of the few things that does 4 sets of five. Although strings of 10-50 are more common without beaks, Paternoster beads are the only thing that springs to mind that uses 4 sets of five in a variation. And people can put any centerpiece and attach patron saint medals to them.

Paternoster beads were used in the English tradition and come from the middle ages. But my grandmother still used some and it is possible it was someone's private devotional. In that case it would be ordered in the way they chose. They are much rarer than a rosary or chaplet but not uncommon in some circles.

Well here are some "links" to pictures (as I cannot post them yet):

ht(t)p://tinypic(dot)com/r/2lco9hv/8

It has 20 beads and then one larger bead near the Saint medal, there is also a much smaller bead attached as well.

 I collect a lot of antique & vintage rosaries & chaplets. St. Roch is my husbands confirmation saint btw. :) Just because as a kid...he thought the name was cool.^_^

The one thing I don't have is the prayer card that goes with it, I wonder if that will be harder to find (or at least the prayer that was on it).
I have a chaplet book. I might find something there. If I were you though...I'd just Google it.
