That isn't true.

The trait "Has ears" is very useful on its own.

The trait "Has slightly asymmetric ears" would provide more information and wouldn't be a particular hindrance if you didn't have specialised processing for it.

Also, vertebrates already have the ability to adapt to changes in their environment plan after injury or new additions.

Crikey; this is a really bad example to use. I only studied biology up to university level so take this with a pinch of salt but organisms with symmetrical ear placements can still locate sound.
It struck me that the act of "cocking an ear" in which we tilt our head to one side, creating an assymetry in ear height relative to a level plane, could be equivalent. A couple of exchanges with the friendly neighbourhood AI (ChatGPT) confirmed this suspicion. It seems our symmetric ear placement still enables our processing system to discern level differences by the tilting of the head. Owls have just taken that one stage further for increased accuracy.

If anyone wishes I can post the entire exchange with ChatGPT. It's not long.

Edit: Of course this in no way takes away the wonder of the owls acute hearing, or of any of the remarkable sensory tools that evolution has delivered to us. Tools that, when a Christian, I was perfectly comfortable were attributable to the process of evolution that God had created. From either perspective, theist then athiest, my sense of wonder is the same.

I when I was a kid running around in the woods at night playing hunters with my mates (we used torches instead of guns) I found out if you open your mouth you can hear better if it's really quiet.
