  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Since you all are my best source of Hebrew I thought I would see if you can help me with a lesson I am putting together.

Exodus 20:7, what is the Hebrew word for the English word “take” or in the NIV “misuse”, also what is the definition?

1 Kings 19:12, what is the Hebrew word for the English word “still”/”calm” in the NIV, and the definition?

Also regarding the passage in 1 Kings, I have heard that some rabbi's think that God's voice was in the silence. Does anyone know any references (Talmud, Midrash, etc) that might reference this idea?

Thanks in advance for your help, I really appreciate it.

Peace be with you...............

As I dust off my NIV...
The Hebrew word for "take" is aFt and comes from the root afn and means to lift up. The word is a 2nd person masculine singular imperfect, what would be important about that is that it is addressing every single person individually. The negative particle used is al and is the strongest NO there is. This is the "Thou Shalt Not" kind of no. There is another word for no l[ and when it is used with an imperfect is almost always expresses intent, will or desire (in other words don't desire to do this or that). The word for "misuse" is the same word "to lift up".

The copyright on my NIV is 1978 and the verse reads "a gentle whisper". The Hebrew phrase is
hQd hmmD lAq The word lAq means voice, hmmD is a noun meaning to be silent. Damam is onomatopoetic in that its sound imitates its meaning. When it is pronounced, the lips are closed so that the mouth is neither taking in nor giving out. The word signifies being silent in the presence of someone listening. This is the word used in Psalm 62:5 (E) 62:6 (H) "My soul, wait in silence for Elohim only"... The last word in the phrase hQd is an adjective meaning thin, lean, little, small.
