  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

lol -- one might also note that they believed in a firmament above the Earth that seperated air from a layer of water (the reason the sky is blue). They also believed in a solid shell in which the stars were housed...

These were pretty common beliefs in all SORTS of cultures back then. That they (ANE cultures) also thought the Earth was young is hardly evidence of its truth!

Exactly. Where can I learn more about this?

Anyone know where I can read about the cosmology subscribed to by the ancient Hebrews (besides the Bible)? Maybe rmwilliamsll has some suggestions?
What extra-biblical sources of the time attest to flat-earth geocentrism, etc.?
For a good beginning i'd look at:
Paradigms on Pilgrimage

In the Beginning: The Opening Chapters of Genesis
by Henri Blocher, David G. Preston

The Meaning of Creation: Genesis and Modern Science by M. Conrad Hyers

I bought the "dictionary of the old testament pentateuch" T.Desmond Alexander & DAvid W.Baker. - Intervarsity Press. ( i don't know how to reference properly). I suggest every christian have it. I'm going to be using it next week in an apologetics lesson i'm giving on creation from a TEs perspective. I'll be the only TE there, but this book is so well referenced it's almost impossible to argue it's points. It reads like an encyclopedia, you look up "creation" and read ten pages on the subject, or "Adam" and there are 2 pages on the word "adam". Cosmology is also in there, and there is a very good description of the other cultures at that time and what their cosmologies were.
