Many Catholics believe, and I dare say many Protestants and Orthodox also think, that some people whose thought processes are disturbing, can be healed with a gentle word and patient doing of good to, for, and with them. Is that so?

Could you give an example? Do you mean mental health challenges or poor reasoning or just nasty, mean thoughts?

I'm thinking about poor thinking, but some poor thinking arises from mild mental illnesses, however, most poor thinking comes from one's upbringing and from the influence of one's peers. Some poor thinking is of the "nasty thoughts" type, like racism, some is communal bigotry against any who differ. I am thinking about people online, especially, some who come to IRC channels or other social forums, and troll with rude comments and hateful comments.

A lot of racism is gone away in America as a result of education and exposure to various work and school environments in the case of folks that you might say "had poor thinking at one time".

Christianity of course as the miracle of the New Birth with the Law of God written on the heart under the NEW Covenant of Jer 31:31-34 and one of those commands in that Law of God is "Love your neighbor as yourself" Lev 19:18.

But there is a popular woke-movement today that claims that "to differ with me - is hate speech" or "to differ with my POV is threatening to me" or 'To differ with my POV on something is racism". When really it is just a difference in POV.

Isn't the whole "woke" thing a product of anti-woke people pretending that "woke" exists? And isn't the idea of being aware of other people's suffering and wanting to alleviate it just Christian ethics?

Jesus and His messengers in the first century , and since then,
would be called rude and hateful by many religious and non-religious.
Perhaps some among the Pharisees and Sadducees would think that the Lord, Jesus Christ, was rude because he spoke of their blindness, hypocrisy, bad example, and other negative qualities and to them Jesus became an object of their hatred but was the man who said "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest" hateful? I do not believe so.

hateful? I do not believe so.
Those serving the enemy of Christ called (and call today) Jesus and His followers many things.
They do not serve Yahweh nor Jesus, but the devil, father of all lies.

Hi Xeno. I saw your comment here and thought I would give my two cents. I'm not sure one can claim that most poor thinking comes from "one's upbringing". This sounds like a nature vs nurture comment. Since this is a Christian forum it would seem natural to say that our sinful nature has a good part to do with our faulty thinking. Aditionally, I believe that anyone that delves into this topic and the lititure would find that most concede it is both nature and nurture.

Some forms of unhealthy thinking come from exaggerated thoughts, like "I'll never live this down". Telling oneself
words like "never", "always", and "nobody" contribute to self bashing and depression. Some try behavioural therapy to help elimate this self defeating self talk. I find that some personality types lend themselves more often to certian types of issues. Of course this is not a certainty

Upbringing plays a big part as well, as you have asserted. Learning coping mechanisms that are handed down from their parents or family unit. Habits are hard to break, whether self taught or learned through family units.

Your original question was...

Many Catholics believe, and I dare say many Protestants and Orthodox also think, that some people whose thought processes are disturbing, can be healed with a gentle word and patient doing of good to, for, and with them. Is that so?

IMO the answer is, sometimes and sometimes not.

May God do a good work in you.

Have you noticed that no one ever really defines 'woke"? They just describe it is things most can agree they don't like. That is poor thinking.
And isn't the idea of being aware of other people's suffering and wanting to alleviate it just Christian ethics?

Yes.
