  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Have I got this right?

Jesus died to forgive all sin. The Ten commandments are there to show us that no one is without sin, and that we need Jesus to die for us to get to God. God does not expect us to follow the Ten Commandments, because he knows no one can, but he would like us to try as best we are able.
Is that about right?

He of course expects us to follwo the Ten Commandments.

He also knows we can't follow them perfectly.

This is why we have Jesus.

However it's not a "pray to God/go to Confession and have all forgiven and return to my sinful life" deal. You have to repent and turn away from sin.

Yes, I know that. But what I'm saying is that God wants you to follow them, but he knows you can't. I mean, who's never got mad at somebody? Had a fight with their parents? Worried about money?
God knows we are not perfect and we sin all the time. but if we trully love God we do our best to obey His teaching by reading the Bible. if you are new christian i suggest to start with New Testament. read thoroghly from beginning to end until you get basic idea what He is teaching. if you notice you sinned, stop it and ask forgiveness and move on. if God is truly in us we would sin less and less as the days and years go by.sincerely

I started reading even before I became a Christian. I am up to John now. I bought the "Evidence Bible", and the explanations Ray Comfort has for the passages are great. I would suggest this to anyone thinking of accepting Jesus.

Yes, you are right.

If we have a strong love in our hearts for God and all the creation of God then we would be automatically be keeping all the Ten Commandments mentioned in the Old Testament too. Because if we love our neighbours (our fellow-human beings) then we will not commit adultery, murder or robbery.

So, the first 2 Commandments help us to follow all the commandments as mentioned in Matthew 22:35-40 "Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."

So as the last verse says, if we follow sincerely the two commandments mentioned in verse 37 and verse 39, then it is equal to following all the commandments and laws mentioned by the prophets.
