How do I know if I have been called to ministry?

I know that I've been called to attend Bible school, but I don't have any concrete evidence of being called to do anything beyond this. I do have a desire to teach, but I don't know anything and I don't like the idea of being a :preach: . I like to help people but I'm not good at it. I like to write but I'm undeducated and I make a fool out of myself more often than not. I don't know how to speak straight - whenever the pressure is put on me I begin to mumble and stutter like a babbling idiot.

So why the heck am I being called to seminary if I could just be going to weekly bible study?????

Luke 10:2 Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.

9:60 Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead; but go thou and preach the kingdom of God.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all th world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

My Grandfather told me a story about this man who read these verses and others that convinced him of the duty of all believers to preach the good news. No higher learning for this man. This man was a cobbler. Not a shoemaker, just repaired shoes. So he got a large world map and placed it in his little shop and everyday he would pray especially for one specific country on that map. Eventually he sold his shop for enough money to go one way to India. He suffered many things in India and did not have a single convert for nearly 5 years. But, he ended up learning 7 different Indian dialects and completed the first english to indian dictionary. His ministry ended up converting thousands. When describing himself he said, I am a plodder. I just plod along.

So my friend, keep ploding along in faith and prayer. All true disciples of Christ are called to the ministry. Just remember that God is the all creative power and he has created the perfect ministry that only you can fill. I have found that God is quite fond of creating things of uniqueness, so don't let the generally acceptable path stand in your way of finding out what your ministry is.

When I read your post I thought of Moses as well...

However, I was also thinking of the disciples...plain fishermen...called by our Lord...and look how they were transformed...and this evening, I found this scripture in Acts 4...Now when they saw the boldness and unfettered eloquence of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and untrained in the schools [common men with no educational advantages], they marveled; and they recognized that they had been with Jesus...Acts 4:13 -Amplified Bible...
God calls...we obey...:prayer:

hey :)

get/nuture a living relationship with him.
learn to love him because of the love he grants you.
take yourself the time to spend two on two with god.keep your ears and eyes open.
discern wether what others tell you is from god, or a test. (christians can be pretty selfish in usurping your potential sometimes...)
find out how you can best communicate with god.
seek and you will find.
and be patient.

god is not hard to find when we search with all our heart.

greetings

My former Bible teacher talked about God putting desires in people. She was not educated in college for her position and yet makes an excellent Bible teacher.

Another point is don't rush things - pray about them, and talk to your vicar/rector/priest about it!

My rector can't remember whether I approached him about me going forward for ordination or whether he first mentioned it to me. This was nearly 5 years ago now, and I'm still not all that much further forward. I've got to get those forms back to the Diocesan Director of Ordinands!! I meant to do them last weekend as it was the Bank Holiday, and got distracted. But I know that when it happens, it will be in God's time and not in mine.

Getting back to your question, the answer is, is that you can't know. So many people say that God called them to a job, a certain school, etc. yet what they use as basis for their "calling" is "a small voice, doors opened, I could feel it in my heart, etc" Yet, all of these are completely subjective. I could see a situation unfolding before my eyes and interpret it as, "God is opening doors" yet another person in my shoes could say, "God is closing doors." So, in regards to, "have you been called to "ministry" (by that word I imagine you mean "professional, church-type ministry," who knows. What you have been called to however (and it is a clear command) is to love God. No matter what you're doing in life, love God. That should be your focus. Do not get side-tracked with whether you've been called or not. (I have yet to find in the Bible where we are to decipher what we've been called to do.)

I realize that a lot of people will disagree with me, that's ok. Read the Bible, not people's experiences. Look at what the Bible says and do not read into the Bible an idea that you want justification for.

Above all else, remember that God is in control and can handle you uncertainty. So do not concern yourself so much with what occupation you should have, rather concern yourself with loving God and loving others, after all, that is how Christ summed up the entire OT, love.

How do you know? Hard to explain. I have a calling to become a full-time Pastor. How do I know? As the Lord calls he equips. I can't put a number on how many time during a service, a sermon of my own would form in my head. Also, the desire, the fire, the excitement, and the peace that comes with the thought of becoming a Pastor confirms it in my own mind between God and I. I just can not wait! I'm within 5 years of become a Pastor. And 1 year before Bible college at Central Bible college! woot! Hope this helps.

Most of the time, God only reveals the next step. He hardly ever illuminates the whole road at one time. Even when people think he does, they are often superimposing their dreams and wishes on the dark area of the future and saying that God has given them His vision for their life.

Here is something I wrote in my blog a while back shortly after the passing of John Paul II. You may find it helpful. I copied it here, as yahoo 360 is still in beta, and outside links do not always work. In addition, here is the link for Humani Generis Redemntionem. http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/pope0258b.htm

I was doing some research early this morning on writings from the past. Pope Benedict XV has a lot of very powerful things to say. His Humani Generis Redemptionem is particuly poignant for those who have concerns for the future.

Although it was written in 1917, it has great relevance for today.

He discusses the importance of preaching. "Faith then cometh by hearing; and hearing by the word of Christ." [Rom. x:17] and how critical it is. He also makes a statement that time comparison's are irrelevant. "For no one can maintain that the Apostles were living in better times than ours, that they found minds more readily disposed towards the Gospel or that they met with less opposition to the law of God." Today some long for the days of old.... I think Pope Benedict XV hit that one on the head. If anything, people have more oppurtunities to accept the salvation of Jesus today, than at anyother time in history.

He then goes on to discuss the charateristics and procedures for selection of those who would preach the Word of God. There is great wisdom in his writings, beyond what I a mere layman can even think to summarize. If only all of those in Christ's church could see and hear these writings. I think its a must read for any who aspire or who are preaching the word of God.

One thing that really stands out. "Whatever is required for admission to the priesthood, is likewise needed if one is to be considered eligible and fit for the office of preaching. "Neither doth any man take this honor to himself, but he that is called by God." [Heb. v:4] Such a vocation is easily determined." I guess it may well be for the leadership, but for the individual being called, its anything but easy for many. A high school friend of mine went down a number of paths, including some time as a rocket scientist before he knew he was being called. The same story seems to repeat itself amongst many. Yet if anything, Pope Benedict XV's writings serve to reinforce it is God's call, and not man's selection to preach his Word.

In section 16, he makes a very poignant point. "But such zeal for God's service as that demands a soul so prepared for hardships that it will not avoid labor or trouble of any kind, and that is the second quality that was conspicuous in Saint Paul. For when the Lord had said to him: "I will show him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake," [Acts ix:16] he so eagerly embraced suffering that he could write: "I exceedingly abound with joy in all our tribulations." [II Cor. vii:4]" This reminds me of John Paul II. The suffering he endured, yet he carried on, his zeal for God's word is a very high standard to follow, yet it is what Jesus requires.

And in section 17... Wow!!! "What gives a man's words life and vigor and makes them promote wonderfully the salvation of souls is Divine grace: "God gave the increase." [I Cor. iii:6] But the grace of God is not gained by study and practice: it is won by prayer." This would have been of great encouragement during the time I took preseminary Greek classes years ago. Its not that study is bad, its not.... but it is truely God who is doing things, not the works of man.

Lastly in section 19... again, one of those admonishments that is exceedingly powerful.
"For our "Preacher of truth" never imagined that he should avoid such subjects, because, owing to the corruption of the age, they appeared too stern to his hearers. Therefore it is clear how unworthy of commendation are those preachers who are afraid to touch upon certain points of Christian doctrine lest they should give their hearers offense. Does a physician prescribe useless remedies to his patient, merely because the sick man rejects effective ones? The test of the orator's power and skill is his success in making his hearers accept the stern truth he is preaching. How did the Apostle unfold the subjects of which he treated? "Not in the persuasive words of human wisdom." [I Cor. ii:4] It is perfectly plain, Venerable Brethren, how important for everybody it is that they should thoroughly realize this, since we see that not a few of our sacred preachers overlook in their sermons the Sacred Scriptures, the Fathers and Doctors of the Church," and the arguments based on sacred theology, and for the most part, make their appeals only to reason." Pope John Paul II took a stand on many issues of controversy. He did not shy away, nor try to justify them with human reasoning. The Word of God was preached without apology, plain and simple, the way it is.

I wondered the same thing when God called me to be a missionary. He called me to a people and a culture I had, in previous years, had zero interest in. In addition to this, when it came time to talk about Jesus, I could barely get a word out. I was like, why me, Lord. I can't give you a fool-proof way to tell if you are called into the ministry. That is between you and God. Sometimes it's something you just know. God can work changes in people, and he can lead them to a ministry that fits them. Just because you don't want to preach doesn't mean you are not called. Sometimes leading a small group can have a far more lasting impact on people. Keep praying. God is going to lead you exactly where he wants you. He will NEVER call you to do something and then leave you to figure it out on your own. Rely on him. God is going to see you through. Have faith. (Yes, I know it's easier said than done sometimes)

There is a LOT of misunderstanding about "being called." No one, NO ONE, knows what they are called to do until they are actually doing it. You may think you are being called to preach or to be a missionary to a particular people group, but you cannot know for sure until you are actually there, successfully ministering to them. Until then, you have a feeling that you are supposed to be preparing to go minister to those people, but you can't say you are "called" to do it until you are there.

I agree. I had never really thought of it like that, but it's the truth. Thanks for pointing that out!
