I'm just wondering. I've never worked over a week in a row, and ony averaged a job every year or so. Sometimes I feel alone in that...Has anyone else had this problem?
The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.
If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.
If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Dear Alive againAlive again said:There are several types of social security and many different scenatios that impact the amount you get. So a few basics related to disability- the basic types of social security I know of are SSI (Social security income) and SSDI (social security disability income). SSI is a program designed for low income senoirs and disabled. You do not have to have worked to qualify for this program, but you do have to meet the income (lack of) guidelines and the disability (according to social security guidelines) or age guidelines. SSDI you must have worked and worked enough credits to have access to these funds and be disabled (according to social security guidelines), If you get ssdi you are then automatically eligible for medicare (but not with SSI). The amount for SSI is around $500-550 range, but there is some variations based on cost of living in your area if I understand correctly, but this may be wrong. You can qualify for both programs, ssdi and ssi if your ssdi payments is low enough to meet the income guidelines for ssi. Using ssdi now does NOT effect your retirement pay at all. When you retire you will get the higher of the amounts, your ssdi amount or your retirement amount.
The amount of ssdi you get is based on your amount paid into the social securiyt system and if high enough and you have dependent kids you may qualify for auxillary benefits which also varies based on amount you paid in. It gets more complicated when you have a spouse who worked and paid in and is deceased becauses widow's benfits overlap. Sometimes it feels like the amount of monthly income is pulled out of a hat by Social Security.
SOOO The only way to know for sure is for you to call social security and ask.
So don't hesitate to call. the process of application can be long and discouraging. but if I have one word of advice it is don't let the system discourage you, appeal and appeal and go befoe the hearing judge. Tell the truth about how bad you get, talk about your worst days is the advice I was given by a social worker I knew. Ask you doc, but don't let others discourage you. Wonderwaleye has created some threads with thoughts and ideas also.
I personally applied and appealed all the way and hired an attorney for my hearing and was successful. For me it took 18 months, my son' s looks like it will take 2 years. He is btw eligible for both ssi and will be eligible for the auxilary portion of my ssdi as a disabled adult of a disabled adult clause in the social security law. so don't be afraid to ask questions!!!!
Others will prob share their experiences as well. You can choose an agent to do the paperwork for you if you need this help.
HOpe this helps, feel free to pm me, but I sure don't know everything about this system!!!!!
Blessings
I get ssi and rsdi, thank god that programs like this are out there for us who have tried but cant hold down a job. I never have been able to and my psychiatrist does not recomend it.
