Either you can high-light the invisible word to see it, or find out for yourself (help guide is 1 post down).

The title is (at the time of writing) an official title!

Harry Potter lovers out there: Your reaction?!

I am very excited. It's a very interesting title... :D

Note: DO NOT read the comments on the posts if you haven't seen the title, they give it away.

EDIT: Bloomsbury has confirmed that this is the actual title.

Yay!!! I just read it on mugglenet and came right here to discuss it! (Well, after I consulted with an English-Spanish dictionary and my godmother -she's another Potter fan- to try and find out what the last word in the title meant. :p)

I think it's coolness that we got the title, but I don't know... the title sounds a bit weird. But I'm still happy to learn what it is! ^_^

So... what do you all think the title means, exactly? Book-wise, I mean? I know it has to give away something of the plot, but knowing JKR, it must be just a place Harry visits that has a great importance in the book.

I can't discuss my reaction if the title is supposed to be undisclosed, so I guess I'll use a spoiler tag:

I don't get it. Deathly Hallows?

1 result for: hallows

American Heritage Dictionary
hal·low (hāl'ō)
tr.v. hal·lowed, hal·low·ing, hal·lows

1. To make or set apart as holy.
2. To respect or honor greatly; revere.

I can't make sense of this in context. Something deathly and holy? Deathly and revered? Is there another definition of this word that I'm missing??

It can also be Halloween - y'know All Hallows Eve

snoochface: I didn't get the title either until I read one of the mugglenet comments and consulted with my godmother. ^_^

Here's the comment that helped me on mugglenet:

A couple of comments: Hallows are places where spirits are known to dwell, so I wonder if we're going to see Harry, Orpheus-like, going into the Underworld, perhaps to retrieve Sirius? (Maybe, maybe, maybe!) On a more pessimistic note, since we normally get the title a year ahead of publication, I'm afraid that 7/7/07 is a dead letter. I hope I'm wrong.

There was a suggestion at 'the leaky cauldron' that Harry may have to travel back in time to the night his parents died...
Hmm... That's a thought!!! o_O

It would be really cool if that would happen, but would Harry be able to resist the temptation of saving his parents? I mean, he was barely able to stop himself from getting Wormtail in book 3. And it would be really cruel of JK to put him in that position. It's a nice idea, but I don't buy it. Maybe. I think.

Yes, and they died in Godric's Hollow on Halloween Night.

From http://www.answers.com/hollow:

Tutor's tip: Note: To "hallow" is to make holy. A "halo" is a circle of light around a religious figure. Something with a hole or void inside is "hollow".

Hmm... That's a thought!!! o_O

I don't think JKR will have Harry do time-traveling again. Remember, in Book 3, Harry was "meant" to time-travel to save himself, thinking it was his father, from the dementors. However, that doesn't mean something else won't happen where he'll get in touch with his parents. Even though his parents aren't ghosts, there may be an alternative way to get in touch with them...a middle ground of some sort like possibly the Veil which separates the living and the dead. Deathly Hallows also may refer to a cemetary.

Some interesting information about the origin of Halloween and the spiritual world from wikipedia.com:

According to what can be reconstructed of the beliefs of the ancient Celts, the bright half of the year ended around November 1 or on a Moon-phase near that date, or at the time of first frost. The day is referred to in modern Gaelic as Samhain ("Sow-in" or alternatively "Sa-ven", meaning: End of the Summer). After the adoption of the Roman calendar with its fixed months, the date began to be celebrated independently of the Moon's phases.

As October 31st is the last day of the bright half of the year, the next day also meant the beginning of Winter, which the Celts often associated with human death, and with the slaughter of livestock to provide meat for the coming Winter. The Celts also believed that on October 31, the boundary separating the dead from the living became blurred. There is a rich and unusual myth system at work here; the spirit world, the residence of the "Sídhe," as well as of the dead, was accessible through burial mounds. These mounds opened at two times during the year, Samhain and Beltane, making the beginning and end of Summer highly spiritually resonant.
