You Call Us From Our Settled Ways
O God,
you call us from our settled ways,
out of old habits and rutted traditions.
You call us into the land of promise,
to new life and new possibilities.
Make us strong to travel the road ahead.
Deliver us from false security and comfort,
desire for ease and uninvolved days.
Let your Word and Spirit dwell in us
that your will may be fulfilled in us
for the well-being and shalom of all.
Amen.
--Vienna Cobb Anderson c 1991
As we end one year and begin a new one let us pause and reflect on our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and what He has done for us and in us. We once were in a state of sin unable to save ourselves. We are convicted by the Holy Spirit to make some changes. Ideas are brought to mind to pray more, study His Word more, take better care of ourselves physically, love more, laugh more and on and on as we are called to perfection and to be holy as He is holy. Just as we can not save ourselves, we can not change ourselves. As we are convicted in regards to area that need change it is in Him and through Him that we are empowered to make those changes.
We are tempted this time of year to make resolutions that if we are honest we know we will fail, we will forget them, we will ignore them and we will otherwise break these promises that we have made to ourselves and often to the people we love. The reason we fail is because we are focused on ourselves and our own power to change ourselves. However, we need to face such things in prayer. Instead of saying "My New Years Resolution is......" let us pray "Father I know you have called me to (insert issue here). I know Your Word says that You will be faithful to finish the work You have begun in me. As this new year starts I ask You, Lord, to recognize the areas You are calling for me to change and I ask You to help me to faithfully step out in courage to work on those areas as You enable me to change, not that I am anything more than clay in Your Potter hands obediently submitting to Your Will and Your Work in me. In Your Sons Name, Amen."
As this new year dawns I pray that you are all richly blessed. That you are granted wisdom, courage, and immeasurable joy confidentally knowing that God loves you and will not leave you.
God bless and Happy New Year
Jason
