So we are into the Fall season, my favorite season of the year. The cooler weather is coming, the fall colors will soon paint the landscapes in a brilliant array of hues. Football is on TV
My three favorite Holidays are just around the corner. Soon it will be time to put out the Halloween displays, set up the haunted house and get ready for another big night of fun and games on October 31. Next, we have the solemn and reflective holiday of Thanksgiving. Then it is time to set up those beautiful Christmas displays as we move into Advent, which culminates with Midnight mass and Christmas.
I do like the routines of fall, the cooler weather, the shorter days, the nice clear nights full of stars. I love getting up early on Sunday and going to brunch at the temple, then coming home , changing clothes, and going to the sports bar for an afternoon of watching football.
A few days ago, I went out to try to find a new Fall Display sign, since mine broke last year. I went into a major hobby chain, and was shocked to find that they had one little row of things for fall and Halloween and yet an entire 1/4 of the store already packed with Christmas items!
I thought of the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving episode we used to watch as kids where they say
Christmas! ? Already!?
In this case, it is not even OCTOBER yet.
To me that is encroachment, but I understand, this store wants to get that almighty material dollar /
Yesterday my Advent book order form arrived in the mail. I use the ones from UNITY out of Missouri They print a very nice booklet every year and it has daily devotional readings for every day. I know that there are many online but I like to have an actual book to hold and read. I focus on Christmas as more of a spiritual celebration and less of a material one. I am less materialistic as time goes on and much much happier that way. Goods do not make me happy. Enjoying the world around me does. And that is still free.
