  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I've got a guinea pig, only one though, which really isn't the best for him, I just don't have space for a large enough cage to have two. best cages & possibly the cheapest is a cube & coroplast cage. You make it (you can find the info online), but from what I understand, they are much better than one from the store since those are often times, too small. I just love my little guy though, he's very talkative. He tells us when he's out of food or water by making a squeeling noise. It's very specific, he only makes it when he needs something. They're awesome though, but I think this one will be my last.

I have a guinea pig. They are so awesome! Mine is about 10 months old. He is very talkative. he squeals quite a bit... I think that they make awesome pets.. I do need to buy him a new cage. That is for sure. I have a cat as well. The cat really doesn't mess with him that much... I hope that you enjoy your new pet!

I have three guinea pigs. So I guess that I know pretty much about them.

~ First, if you get more than one, make sure that you don't get a boy and a girl, or if you are ready to breed them, make sure that you know how. (We bred ours)

~Second, don't feed them Iceburg Lettuce or Cockatoo Celery. both will kill them.

~ Third, give them bedding of wood chips and they also enjoy timothy hay.

~Fourth, give them a salt lick and something to live in (plastic igloos are great)

~Last, change the cage every week.

Guinea pigs are so much nicer in every way than hamsters,IMHO. It is a good idea to do some research first so you can give your pet knowlegeable care. Your library is an excellent source of free info. I hope you have a wonderful experience with yours.

My granddaughter had a guinea pig she loved so much. "Pepsi" was given something to eat that killed her. I can't remember now what it was she ate but it was something that seemed ok for her. No one knew at the time that would happen of course. You just have to be very careful about their diet and never give them anything that you don't know for sure is okay.

Iceburg lettuce has no nutritional value at all,but I was not aware it could kill them. Seems I remember they can eat Romaine or other "leaf lettuce", but too be safe I would stick with cabbage unless a good book said otherwise. I haven't read about them in years, would need to refresh if I ever got my granddaughter one,LOL!

It's not the food itself that will kill them. Iceberg lettuce, in large quantities, can cause them to have diarrhea, which will kill them if it's not treated. Since Iceberg has no nutritional value, no point in giving it anyways. Small amounts of other lettuce are ok, green leaf and romaine are good choices. I personally stick with parsley & cilantro for the leafy greens. Garlic and onions I believe can also kill them (can cause them to become anemic), and also chocolate. I stick with the basics pretty much. Parsley, a little carrot, bell peppers, orange, sometimes a little kiwi, apples. For his regular food, only use the straight pellets. Don't get the mixes that have pellets and other little things in it. The other items are completely unnecessary and are not good for them at all. For a young pig, under 6 months, use alfalfa hay, and for older pigs, use timothy hay.

Also, for the bedding, avoid Pine & Cedar shavings like the plague. It can cause respiratory damage to both animals and people. Only use aspen shavings or another product called Carefresh. Don't use newspaper unless you know for a fact that your newspaper only uses non-toxic dyes. And if your cage starts looking kind of dingy, use plain white vinegar to clean it. It will break down ammonia build up and is safe for piggies.

I've never actually owned one but we looked after three for a week or so when our friends went away. They were kept in just a chicken-wire cage (a proper one, but it didn't have a floor) and we had to keep moving the cage because they would eat all the grass! By the end of the week, our yard was just brown dead and eaten grass.

Mum wasn't too impressed, but I think they are cute. I had to settle for mice though, I think mice are cuter ;) (I'm trying to convert.....lol)
