Maybe?

I grew up on excessively violent video games, such as Mortal Kombat. But that was by the standard's of then, not now. The newer games are much more realistic-looking and could potentially be damaging for children, except for the fact that games these days come with an age rating system, so a game that is rated as M (17+) should not be played for 4 year olds. If children grow up playing trash like that, it's only their parents fault.

I play games like Fallout 3, Prototype, GTA IV. For the first two, it's the story. For GTA, it's because you can't (legally) do the same things in reality.

In my opinion, as long as you don't attempt things in said game, or take the game's morals (or lack thereof) , you'll be fine.

I had a discussion with someone not long ago in regards to video games. Her adult son was playing a PlayStation 3 video game called Uncharted 3 (developed by a software company called ‘Naughty Dog’) when the Lord told him to stop playing the game! Nothing was going to satisfy her adult computer geek son but to finish this game to the end. He said he was really enjoying the game when the Lord spoke to him, "Stop playing’. He said the compulsion to play was so strong, he really didn't want to stop. So he says to Abba, "WHY?" - God spoke again, "Stop playing." Then the game console froze up and he could do nothing with the controller. He said he finally gave up and said sullenly "OK God." I can imagine this adult son and the Lord struggling over the game controller! He’s not found out why as yet but is continuing to ask Him about it.

Another game named “Temple Run” for the Iphone/Android is also a game the Lord told him not to play. Now why would the Lord do this? To protect us of course. In this particular game the user has to move their finger on the screen in various directional strokes (randomly up, down, curved right, curved left etc). If combined together they could quite possibly be writing something out and the user would not notice because they are busy following the character on the screen negotiating various turns and jumps. The Lord told him to stop playing it because it most likely was spelling out some sort of demonic message. This is dangerous to youths and adults alike because the enemy of our soul will use anything, even trickery, to cause us to lose our legal birthright or blessing from the Lord.. we all know the story of how Jacob tricked Esau and Esau lost his blessing as a result of it!

He also mentioned the Lord showed him that the video game “Silent Hill” has a very evil spirit attached to it. He bought the game, but when he got home and started to play it, he sensed the evil spirit. He stopped playing it and immediately took it back to the store within two hours of purchase.
There is another scary game called “Dead Space” he found rather ominous.

We must pray about all things. The enemy is incredibly legalistic and even if a child or adult playing a game unknowingly agrees to a subliminal satanic message in it, the enemy holds that up before God to use against the person. The enemy has been tricking God's people into saying or doing things since time began. Even the most innocent of video games or movies can carry the trickery of our adversary trying to bind us up so we can’t reach our full potential in Christ.

I grew up playing Super Mario Bros. and shooting games like GoldenEye and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter. They were both enjoyable but I understood that they were simply games and not indicative of the real world. Most of my friends spent their youth playing violent games and turned out just fine.

CHRISTIANS!!!

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!!!

There are plenty of reasons God wouldn't want him to play Temple run. Maybe God had something else He wanted him to do with his time, but "Writing demonic messages" is absurd for several reasons.

First of all, Esau was not tricked at all. He WILLINGLY and KNOWINGLY sold his birthright to Jacob. A bad deal is not a trick. Esau lost the blessing because of trickery, but he was not the one being tricked. God isn't going to hold us to a deal that we didn't know we made because God is not a thief or a con artist.

Secondly, you pick up your finger after swiping to one side or the other. Is the "Demonic language" made up of only straight lines? Doesn't that mean that if you make any motions at all you could be selling your soul? If you can make "Demonic Messages" on accident by swiping your finger? What else can you do on accident? The letters r t d g and v make a pentagram on the keyboard. Maybe we shouldn't use those letters?

Thirdly, if spelling out "Demonic messages" on accident was an actual threat then shouldn't he have warned us about it in the Bible?

Good gracious, can you just sit down and think for a moment?

-----

As for the actual subject at hand, so long as you aren't being a mindless consumer of the violence and making an effort to analyze what message the game is trying to send you so you can conscienceless reject immoral themes, then I think you should be fine.

-Long Post-

Can't quote everything do to post length on my PS3 browser...

Re: Uncharted
You do realize that PS3 systems tend to freeze, right? That the system itself had a minor issue that resetting would fix.. But I'm not saying I don't believe you; on the contrary, this is the only part of your post I believe. As God does work mysteriously.

Re: Temple Run
All I have to say is NO. Just, no... Seriously.... -_-

Re: Silent Hill
Or maybe, just maybe, the game was too scary for him. Not that I blame him, as Silent Hill is a very twisted and scary SURVIVAL HORROR game. Of course it's gonna seem evil, evil is scary

Seriously, stop assuming everything is a sign or evil just because you cannot explain it. Yes, Uncharted freezing could've been a sign from God, but your other "reasons" are unfounded and are purely assumptions

^That^

Silent Hill is a horror game, so its suppose to be "evil", more or less its who you are facing (as with most games really, good vs bad). It doesn't mean it literally is evil. Should someone be playing it? Thats up to them.

I come into a thread about Call of Duty and see a post about Silent Hill. So I'll just say this... yes, Call of Duty is much more traumatic, for me. I can't for the life of me grasp the concept of aiming down the sights. It throws off my whole mechanic and skill level. The best game I grew up on? Goldeneye 007. No, not the Wii one, that's just a crappy CoD clone. The real one. On N64. Nothing will ever pass that for FPS gaming as far as I'm concerned. Except possibly Perfect Dark. Put those two games together and what do you get? Goldeneye X, the best FPS creation possible, with every Goldeneye player's dreams come true.

I liked the no russian level. Not because you can kill people. But because it made alot of people think about what being bad actually is in a game. And how it applies to real life. War is not just about shooting an enemy. Its about things most people cannot understand unless they have been in war and seen the horror.

To be fair I have not served. Nor do I want to because I know how many come back with PTSD and can't adjust to being a civilian again. They are on edge, always fearing shooting out of no where, bombs going off...etc. I've met some who think no russian was awesome and they would do it in real life. Then I show them uncut war footage of death happening. Granted its not live and in person, but when they see what they do almost all of them are sick to their stomachs and realize war is not like it is in a video game.

Some thankfully never play violent games again. Some just dismiss it after saying a video game is digital and just entertainment. However they often still begin to not be able to separate the two in their mind. They often have violent thoughts or are quick to anger and hurting people. I'm not against games, but I am not also for them. Especially with the younger generations who are living in a world full of South Park, Jack*** and other brain rotting programs that desensitize them.

Reddit is one of those places where often the more desensitized people are. Disgusting view on gore, sex, violence...etc. Kids killing themselves son cam or hurting others and posting it. Kids getting naked on cam for other kids. Kids photoshopping gory pictures of each other that they hate. Its so sad. I won't even go near that site.

than growing up on say Super Mario Brothers.

Will these highly violent and graphical video games damage our souls?

Not if parents monitor them properly. I wasn't allowed to play M rated games PERIOD until I was about 15. I can't say that I would raise my parents any differently.

A funny "Everybody Hates Chris" line comes to mine, when the daughter tells the mother that all the other kids get to wear earrings.

The mother's response: "Well, if all the other kids got a butt whooping would you want one too?"
