Basically Grid computing works by you installing a program like a screensaver and what it does is download some data and analyze numbers for a solution. So if you were in the medical profession and wanted to analyze data on some proteins you would send chunks of your data out to all the people running this program to crunch the data and then return it to you. You can analyze extremely huge amounts of data this way with out ever needing time on a super computer.
Such applications of this technology are:
Distributed.net- Crunches mathematical functions/operations for solutions.
United Devices- Analizes molecules for medical cures and combating bioterrorism.
FightAIDS@Home- Generating and testing candidate drug compounds against detailed models of evolving AIDS viruses.
SETI@home- Analyzes radio telescope data to Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
Anyone know of any additional links not mentioned here? Personally I have the one from United Devices and they are running a program on Smallpox. Actually Id be interested in one that purely focused on cancer but I know of none at this point.
Anyway, UD is crunching for post-smallpox treatments under a program that is called the PatriotGrid. They are focusing on objectives that are directly linked to counter-bio-terrorism. Originally they started with Cancer, which I was involved with back then, but once that was completed they started the PatriotGrid program. They started with Anthrax and are currently working on Smallpox.
