  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi. I am wanting to get my girlfriend (who is Catholic, I am not) a new bible for Christmas. I have a Protestant NASB translation that I absolutely love, but know that the Catholic bible contains some books that the Protestant bible does not.

Are there any specific bibles that you have found to be great? She is 21 and a Senior at a top University.

Thanks.

For Catholic Bibles I go with Revised Standard Catholic Edition: link

That one is not a study bible though. The Study Bibles for the Revised Standard come as full books for each book of the Bible.

There is a good Catholic Study Bible with all of it in one that is the New American Translation. I do not like the subtleties of the translation as much but it has a good concordance, Good historical essays and study guides on each book and is pretty nice. That is this one: link There is also a second edition of that version: link

The only difference in the two would be slightly updated study guides...either one of the two would be fine.

All three have all the books a Catholic Bible should have.

Haydock Commentary Douay Rheims bible. Its my favorite bible and beautiful, but expensive.

Also the Navarre Bible series. Or the Igantius bible

Too late for Christmas now but....I thought I'd throw this out there as a resource.

The Ignatius Bible is my favorite Catholic Bible. It the Revised Standard Version. They, the Ignatius folks, are partnering with Scott Hahn on a full Ignatius Study Bible. As that is a major undertaking they are releasing each individual book of the bible as a Study as they build up the full work. This link is to the Book of Mark. I figured I'd just link to one and you can search out others. I think I have most of the New Testament so far. I'm working through John at the moment. Very well done.

Too cool. I didn't know that. Along the same lines as the Navarre then.

The RSV-CE is my favorite too.
