  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'll update this regularly (as in maybe two times a week). Comments are more than welcome.

Chapter 1 - "Red Eye"

Hiro Kaizuka, at seventeen years of age, was a grade A student in Japan's schools. Because of his father's job, he travelled constantly. He never made any friends because he really didn't care about anyone. He only wanted to focus on one thing: study.

But one day at about two-thirty in the morning, Hiro decided it would be a good time to stop studying. He stepped out of his room and into the kitchen/dining room/living room and grabbed a bottled water. Then as he turned to go back to his room, he noticed something odd. His father's door was wide open, and his father wans't there.

"Maybe he's working late," Hiro said to himself. He went to bed without giving it a second thought.

A few hours later, before the sun had even risen to view, there was a knock at his door. Hiro turned over to look at the clock and groaned. "Who is this, bothering me this early in the morning. I've got a test in the morning, for God's sake..."

Hiro jumped up and opened the door. A policeman was there at the door. Needless to say, he was surprised by this. It certainly didn't help that he had a phobia for cops. Hiro just stared wide-eyes at the man.

"I'm sorry to bother you this early in the morning," he said. "Are you Hiro Kaizuka?"

Hiro managed a nod.

"I'm sorry to have to tell you this, son," the policeman said. "Your father was killed last night. We believe someone put a bomb in his car. We don't know who."

Hiro's began to shake violently. "Dead? Why? Why would anyone--"

Hiro fainted midthought. When Hiro woke up, he began to wonder what would happen to him. "Is anyone in my family still alive? If not, how will I support myself in school? Will I need to get a job?" But then the phone rang. Hiro reluctantly answered the phone.

"Hello, Hiro Kaizuka?" the voice said. "I just heard the aweful news. I'm so sorry about your father."

"Who is this?"

"I'm your grandfather, Ayumu Kaizuka."

"Grandfather? I didn't know I had a grandfather."

"Your father never mentioned me? Well, I suppose since I've lived in America for so long, he just forgot about me. But I'm so glad to finally talk to you, my boy. Listen, I know this will be hard for you, but I want you to come and live with me here in America. That is... If someone else hasn't volunteered to take you in already."

"No. There is no one else."

Without hesitation, Hiro packed his bags and took a plane to America. But still, there was something very suspicious about this Ayumu person. Sure, he may have lived in America while he was in Japan, but why hadn't he ever called? Why didn't he ever send mail? Hiro did his research, and Ayumu was his grandfather alright, but there was definitely something he wasn't telling him."

Chapter 1.2 - "Red Eye"

Well, the plane ride was about at pleasurable as possible. Ayumu had paid for Hiro's flight to be first class. But he couldn't really enjoy himself too much. It wasn't much in his nature to take things easy.

When he arrived in America, there was a chauffeur there waiting to take him to his grandfather. When he arrived at the gates of the mansion, he was surprised by the size of the place.

"Is this the place?" Hiro asked excitedly. "Wow... This guy must be loaded. I wonder why my dad never talked to this guy."

Ayumu was at the front door to greet him. He was a big man, not weak from age, though he was obviously old. His hair was still dark, and he didn't slump or have any visible liverspots. He seemed very fit for a grandfather.

"Hiro, my boy!" Ayumu said with his arms stretched to offer Hiro a firm hug. Hiro didn't move or say a word; he just stood still as his grandfather wrapped his arms around him and nearly sufficated him. "It's so good to finally meet you. Come in, come in! Make yourself comfortable!"

Hiro took at seat on a nearby couch, which was very comfortable. An Eglishman walked in then offered to get Hiro a drink.

"This is George Oxford," said Ayumu. "He's our servant."

"I'd like a Coke," Hiro replied.

"You like to read, Hiro?" Ayumu asked.

"Yeah." Hiro wouldn't say so, but pretty much all he ever does is read.

Ayumu signaled him to follow, so he did. Ayumu lead him to a huge room, two stories tall, full of nothing but books, tables, and lamps. There were two spiral staircases from the first floor to the second. Hiro eyed the library covetously. He was going to spend a lot of time in there.

The next couple of days, Hiro ate better than he ever had, slept in the most comfortable bed, and was free to do whatever he wanted, even drive his grandfather's many sports cars. But he couldn't shake off this feeling of emptyness that's been plagueing him. He began to feel despressed. And all the love and affection his grandfather offered him never helped anything.

At the private school he was attending then, he learned more, but nothing was different. Once again, he had no friends. Hiro didn't talk to anyone, and no one talked to him.

One day, the feeling took over. He stood on the top of the school. It was as if someone else had taken over and he was just watching. He looked down from the edge and just jumped off.

((Thought this would be a good place to take a break. Hopefully the suspense will bring people back. :) ))

Chapter 1.3 - "Red Eye"

((Oops. Kind of forgot about this. Oh, well. I'll try to pick up from where I left off.))

Someone was watching as Hiro jumped. He was covered in a black robe and wore a halloween mask of a lion. He laughed menacingly as he pulled out his cell phone, holding it in an awkward way from the top half of the phone up to his ear.

"The deed is done, sir," he spoke into the phone.

"And I trust he's still alive?" a voice replied.

"Yes," he replied, not at all trying to hide his disappointment.

"Good. Retreat now. The rest is up to me."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Hiro woke up in the hospital. He was being rolled down to the ER. He cried out in pain. And then he fainted.

Next thing he knew, he was in his bed at home. He was attached to a heart monitor, and fluids were still being injected into him. And he was still in a lot of pain. But this time his pain was different. His bones weren't broken anymore.

Ayumu was sitting beside Hiro. When he heard Hiro moan, Ayumu raised his head (apparently he was also asleep).

"Hiro!" he said. "I'm so glad you're okay! Don't scare me like that! You're all I've got left! If I hadn't been researching a way to replace human bones with metal, you would be dead right now."

"What happened?"

"You don't remember? You jumped off a building! You tried to kill yourself!"

"I did? All I remember is...this insidious laughter."

"Hiro, make sure you get plenty of sleep. You're the first person to be fixed this way, so we can't be completely sure how long it will take for you to recover. For now, just focus on getting better."

Ayumu got up and began to leave. But then he stopped at the door and turned back to Hiro. "Hiro, tell me. What could have caused you to do something like this?"

"I don't know."

"Come now, Hiro. There's always a reason."

"I guess, with my father dead... I don't know. Maybe my life feels empty now."

"I see. Then we can only hope that the ones responsible will be brought to justice soon. Sleep well, Hiro."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

It didn't take long for Hiro to recover. And when he did recover, he discovered his strength had increased. He even felt more light-weight, but he knew that couldn't be true with his metal bones.

Hiro also noticed some strange things that he decided to keep to himself. Like when he was sitting on the couch on day, watching cartoons. He got up to grab a book and sat on the opposite side when he came back. So the remote was on the opposite end. When he reached out to grab it so he could reduce the volume of the TV, the remote moved on its own to his hand.

Then, one time he lost his footing while walking down the stairs (probably because he was trying to read a book at the same time), so he dropped the book and grabbed onto the railing to save himself. When he was back on his feet, he discovered that his hand did not want to let go of the railing. It was like he was super-glued where he was. Finally, just when he gave up, his hand slid off. Then he was curious, he placed his hands on the wall and thought to himself, "I need to hang on to this wall." Then his hands were stuck to the wall. He tried the same this with his feet. It worked. He climbed the entire wall this way and then lost his concentration and fell. But the fall did not hurt him at all. In fact, the fall felt surprisingly light.

But that wasn't all. When Hiro returned to school he was worried because he hadn't studied (first time in a decade that this has happened). He frantically studied his notes. Then when he looked up at the clock, the second hand seemed to have stopped. A moment later, it finally moved. Hiro assumed that the clock was slow, so he looked at his watch. Then he discovered that his digital watch was moving just as slow.

"Must be low on batteries," he said to himself.

Then another student stepped into the classroom. But there was something odd in this student's movements, they were all extremely slow, and the sounds emitted by his feet sounded drawn out, lasting at least three times longer than it should.

Hiro looked back at the clock and time sped up again. As he willed it, time sped up and slowed down. He discovered this power was limited, but still very unique.

In secret, while no one was around or at least looking, Hiro practiced these abilities. Pulling in and repelling inanimate objects, and climbing walls, and manipulating time flow. And with these powers, he became very popular in college basketball, though he tried not to make it too obvious that he was cheating. For the first time in a long time, people were actually paying attention to him, and even talking to him. Life was finally something enjoyable to him.

I'm not afraid that anyone will steal my ideas here. I posted this here as practice for myself, with no intentional plans of where the story was going to go.

If I have a really good idea, I always keep it to myself. But when I need practice, like I do here, I don't really care. And I don't think there's enough material here that anyone would be willing to steal it.
