CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Generally you have to use Genetive forms to form a partitive.
Having said that I have to admit that this has begun to change. More and more people in Germany use the dative instead of the genetive now to indicate the partitive: They say "I aß drei Stücke von dem Kuchen" instead of "des Kuchens".
A very popular book in Germany dealing with language and good style therefore has the title: "Der Dativ ist dem Genitiv sein Tod"

ja, hab einige kolumnen im internet gelesen (da ich sonst selten magazine wie den spiegel lese) und die haben mir wirklich gefallen. deshalb das buch. hab mir sogar überlegt ob dich die hör-cd kaufen soll, mich dann aber fürs buch entschieden.
(wobei bastian sick meinen schreibstyle nicht gutheissen würde, da ich alles klein schreibe, und andere faux-pas drin hab!)

I don't know much German, but I noticed you used "faux-pas", Soda. I didn't know German used that word too.

Hi Ainuhina,
just wanted to say 'Hello'. Hope you are well and have fun at the university. Just sitting in school. I have just given a paper (Referat) about 'Elizabeth'. Was wicked! I played the jugde (Richter) and I had to speak a dialogue. In the following lesson I will have a German test, but I think I have learnt enough to write a 'A' or 'B'.

yes, we have lots of words from other languages. especially here in switzerland. we even use some french words that a german would not use (trottoir, merci, bijou,..). some english words are already so common that we don't even know what it used to be in german; we call them "Anglizismen".

know that Elisabeth is Sissi (there's a musical about her called Elisabeth)....
Have so far had a lot of fun here at Uni....started at 12 - so could sleep long - and now I'll have literature 
....and then sociolinguistics (where we learn all the stuff about different English dialects and accents)...
By the way: Referat = Report or Talk - not paper (which means schriftliche Arbeit)

hier in Österreich gibt es auch einen Haufen Anglizismen....die meisten älteren Leute haben was dagegen (ich auch - find es einfach nicht OK wenn wir englische Wörter verwenden wo wir doch auch das deutsche Wort sagen könnten)....
ich find es OK wenn es ein Fachausdruck ist, für den es kein Deutsches Wort gibt, aber sonst bin ich für Deutsch.....
